Los Angeles Galaxy vs. FC Dallas: Rating the Galaxy Players
MLS News
Sunday, 29 April 2012 02:11

Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy didn't play well enough to get any points whatsoever Saturday night. So their 1-1 draw with FC Dallas proved to be quite flattering, given that the equalizer came from the unlikeliest of people in Pat Noonan.

The Galaxy can't defend right, they gave up a would-be game-winning penalty, the counter-attack held them at bay, but most importantly, Los Angeles simply couldn't finish their chances, period.

Now, I cover the Los Angeles Blues on USL PRO here on Bleacher Report, and I can tell you that the Blues would have scored more goals on FC Dallas—and that is saying something, given that the Blues have yet to win a match in their own league as of yet.

But that's a different story. Here are my player ratings for the Galaxy in their 1-1 draw with FC Dallas.

Bill Gaudette 6.5

For the most part, it was a great debut for Bill Gaudette. He made four saves, did routing collections, and held FC Dallas's offense at bay. The only game missing from Gaudette is knowing how to stop penalties. Otherwise, this was an admirable debut.

Sean Franklin 5.5

Had some pace and did try to get some crosses forward. Defensively, it was a more-of-the-same night from Franklin.

David Junior Lopes 2

Not exactly Lopes's best performance in a Galaxy uniform. Nearly allowed FC Dallas to go out to a flying start just minutes into the match. Also tired out and had to be subbed.

On top of all that, he was his own worst enemy at the hour mark, forcing Gaudette to foul Blas Perez in the box. Lopes threw this game away for LA, and he knows it.

A.J. DeLaGarza 7

Best player defensively, arguably of the entire team. DeLaGarza has the speed and skill to stop forward runs with pace. And he did his job to perfection. Very impressive performance from DeLaGarza.

Todd Dunivant 5

Nothing too remarkable from Dunivant. Average effort: not bad, not great...draw-worthy. On to the next player.

Landon Donovan 4.5

So much for Landon Donovan trying to be Fernando Torres against Barcelona. A shot in the 11th minute off the post said it all. His rating would have been a bit more respectable...if he had been allowed to convert the PK attempt in the 49th minute.

David Beckham 3

David. You have the manager of Team GB coming. Not a good way to impress the boss, now is it?

In spite of Beckham possessin experience, he just doesn't have the know-how to make pinpoint deliveries and find someone to finish them. A sorry night for this fading Olympic hopeful.

Juninho 4

Mike Magee 3.5

Magee was trying to do too much offensively and every long-distance attempt sailed wide of the mark. Here's a tip, Mr. Magee: how about you try to just cross a ball and pray to the football gods that someone in the white top with blue sash will finish the chance?

Robbie Keane 4

Miserable night for Keane. Not as bad as Beckham's, but it was just facepalm-worthy. The best chance of the night to break open the scoring, in the 49th minute of play...and it aims wide right.

The next time Keane tries from the spot, it better be in a shootout. During a club friendly, if possible.

Edson Buddle 6

Buddle's role nowadays is to hold up play for Keane, Donovan, Beckham and so on and so forth, and he did that well. But his other role is to score goals. Where are the goals, Budson? Holding up play is not going to be enough when Seattle welcome you and the rest of the G's.

Chad Barrett 5

Adam Cristman 5

Both Barrett and Cristman, who came in as subs along with Pat Noonan, were responsible for setting up the sequence that spared the Galaxy some major-league blushes.

Pat Noonan 6

Scored the equalizer and opened his account in the process. Will we see more from Noonan this year?

MLS News
Sunday, 29 April 2012 01:25

Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy, for what it's worth, can consider themselves a very lucky team.

A disappointing performance offensively was counterbalanced by stoppage-time heroics from the unlikeliest of sources: Pat Noonan, who opened his scoring account and salvaged a 1-1 draw for the Galaxy against Schellas Hyndman's FC Dallas at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Here are six things we learned from this match. And they are big ones.

MLS: 5 Lessons Learned from the Revs' Loss to the New York Red Bulls
MLS News
Saturday, 28 April 2012 18:58

Well, that didn't go too well.

Despite losing Thierry Henry in the 23rd minute with a hamstring injury and Mehdi Ballouchy who seemed to pick up a knock later on in the game, and despite fielding a vastly inexperienced team, the New York Red Bulls hung onto Henry's 7th minute goal to win 1-0 at Red Bull Arena against the New England Revolution on Saturday.

New England failed to score on rookie Ryan Meara and the makeshift back four that coach Hans Backe assembled before the game, even though the Revs dominated the second half.

Here are some lessons we learned today after watching the Revs lose their third straight game.

6 Reasons Why the New England Revolution Will Beat the New York Red Bulls
MLS News
Friday, 27 April 2012 15:09

The New England Revolution, despite the hiring of young, energetic Jay Heaps to replace Steve Nicol and a multitude of offseason signings, are off to another shaky start. They sit in eighth place in a weak Eastern Conference at 2-4 and are coming off a loss to second-place D.C. United.

On top of this, they are heading to New York to play the Red Bulls, who are always a dangerous side. How can a team that consists of deadly strike duo Thierry Henry and Kenny Cooper not be dangerous?

Despite this, I think the Revs can pull off an upset on Saturday at the Red Bull Arena. Here are some reasons why.

MLS commissioner Don Garber wants a second team in New York City. The New York Cosmos want to be that team.

By most accounts, a deal to bring a second New York team into MLS is only a stadium deal away.

While the Cosmos organization won't be the only group bidding for the franchise, they're the one that should get it.

Here are 8 reasons why.

MLS Preview: 4 Matches to Watch in Week 8
MLS News
Thursday, 26 April 2012 00:36

I'll be honest, Week 8 of Major League Soccer lacks a bit of a punch since there are very few marquee matches, and the top team in the league, Sporting Kansas City, has a bye week.

That being said, there are nine matches scheduled for Saturday, with all but two taking place in the evening.

With that much soccer in compressed time, there is no way that anyone can be able to see all of the leagues matches this weekend.

So here I am to give you which four matches I recommend you do not miss.

Los Angeles Galaxy: Ins and Outs for April 25, 2012

Galaxy Beat Blues Again at Home Depot Center

In a match that featured fringe players, Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy were engaged in a dogfight with Charlie Naimo's Los Angeles Blues of the USL on Tuesday.

Despite an improved performance from the Blues, the Galaxy still prevailed 3-2 at the Home Depot Center.

Adam Cristman opened the scoring in the 26th minute thanks to a delivery from Chad Barrett, who also scored a goal of his own in the 48th minute of play. Hector Jimenez's 67th-minute goal would prove to be the game winner, as the Galaxy were forced to withstand a brace from Carlos Borja in the 70th and 86th minutes of play.

Back on the pitch for the Galaxy was Leonardo, the young Brazilian defender whose injury last year sidelined him for several months. Leonardo came on in the 40th minute of play.

“Psychologically it’s great for him,” LA Galaxy Reserve Team Head Coach Curt Onalfo told reporters. “It’s been a long road and he’s really making progress. It was good to see him for 10 minutes.”

“It was 10 very important minutes,” Leonardo said. “I need more games, more training sessions in order to return (to first team action).”

An ACL injury in a match against the Chicago Fire sidelined Leonardo last season. It has been a long road to recovery, but it is certain that the Brazilian is moving back in the right direction.

Leonardo told MLSSoccer.com's Luis Bueno:

It’s difficult. This month, it’s been one year since I got hurt. I have a lot of desire to get back but I have to be smart about it. I have to respect my teammates as well. There are a lot of players in that position too so I have to respect them...I felt good but I need more games, more rhythm. 11-on-11 is different than playing in small [sided] games I’ve been doing. I need more time and more reserve games.

Franklin Closes In on Career Milestone

Defender Sean Franklin is expected to make his 100th appearance for the Los Angeles Galaxy when they take on FC Dallas at the Home Depot Center on Apr. 28. (Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on KDOC and KWHY.)

Franklin was selected in 2008 by the Galaxy in the MLS SuperDraft and made an immediate impact, being named Rookie of the Year.

Despite being sidelined for periods of time, Franklin has settled into his position at right back and has been a reliable, if slightly inconsistent, force in the LA back line.

Franklin told LAGalaxy.com's Larry Morgan:

I’m just thankful I’ve been able to play 100 games. I’m just glad I’ve had 100 with the LA Galaxy and I hope to have 100 more...It’s crazy. When people ask me how long I’ve played, I tell them it’s already been five years. It’s gone by so quick. I can remember my first game like it was yesterday. It’s been a fun time, and I’m looking forward to the next few years.

MLS: Picking an All-Star Team Based on Performances So Far
MLS News
Wednesday, 25 April 2012 15:39

We have seen some excellent performances so far this 2012 MLS season. Whether it was Thierry Henry's hat-trick vs Montreal or Aurelien Collin's dominance in the back for Kansas City, plenty of players have stood out as clear favorites for a MLS All-Star selection. Here is a list of the best XI so far this season and who would deserve a spot on the team if the selections happened today. Enjoy!

Note: Normal All-Star lineups are based off of voting from fans. I am merely selecting the eleven players who deserve a spot based on their excellent early season play. I also acknowledge that a 3-4-3 is not the expected formation the All-Star team would play. However, this formation allowed me to highlight the 11 best players in MLS so far this season.
