Sene and Cardenas Typifying Remade Revolution Attack
MLS News
Thursday, 03 May 2012 11:15

Starved for goals against Colorado on Wednesday, the Revolution turned once again to their cast of new faces.

And in Saer Sene and Fernando Cardenas, they have found two very promising signings.

Add in players like Jose Moreno, Kelyn Rowe and Lee Nguyen, and the Revolution have found a strategy to overhaul their struggling attack: strength in numbers.

So far, only flashes of potential have risen to the surface (since New England still sits with two more losses than wins at 3-5), but last night’s 2-1 win against the Rapids was particularly representative of what this team is capable of when they're firing on all cylinders.

That they were down 1-0 early was also significant. Gauging a team’s capability is best done when they’re losing.

And watching Jay Heaps’ squad respond was heartening for New England fans.

Rather than panicking, players like Benny Feilhaber, Shalrie Joseph and Clyde Simms simply settled down. They began grinding down Colorado’s passing game and winning the ball higher and higher up the field.

And when possession was regained, almost every Revs player on the field avoided the panicky, rushed passes straight up field that soccer teams so often resort to when they’re trailing.

Instead, they calmly worked good passing moves. This slowly sucked in Colorado’s defense, who grew frustrated at constantly having to chase down the Revs.

And accordingly, long balls resulted in both goals.

The two Revolution goals also had excellent finishes. Sene’s no-doubter into the heart of the goal was clinical. Cardenas’ lob over Matt Pickens was a masterful showing of skill and creativity.

That said, the win stemmed less from free-flowing soccer and more from timely defense and solid goalkeeping from Matt Reis. The Rapids actually had nearly 60% possession and out-shot the Revolution (19-16).

With a solid win under their belts, the team moves back towards an even record. They have a short turnaround with only two days to travel to Salt Lake City and prepare for one of the league’s best teams.

It will be a stiff test, yet if the Revolution can finally achieve a measure of consistency, there’s no reason why they can’t come away with a good result.

Seattle Sounders: Freddy Montero Scores Absolute Stunner Against LA Galaxy
MLS News
Thursday, 03 May 2012 10:53

The Seattle Sounders had plenty of chances in the first half to bury the Los Angeles Galaxy yesterday, but they squandered many of them.

Eddie Johnson finished off an excellent move and ball from Mauro Rosales in the 40th minute to score his second goal in as many games to fire his ahead. However, the real clincher came in the second half.

Fredy Montero lined up an ambitious shot from 35-yards out and sent a dipping blast into the upper-90 to beat Galaxy goalkeeper Bill Gaudette, who was filling in for Los Angeles' usual starting keeper Josh Saunders (Saunders recently entered Major League Soccer's substance abuse treatment program).

The goal was Montero's first of the season, and probably his most ambitious and impressive goal in his short but already impressive career.

"When you have the opportunity to shoot from that distance you just try," he said after the game, per ESPN. "Thank God that ball went into the net."

Montero's newest strike partner Johnson tried his hand in Europe after a successful career in MLS. It didn't turn out so well for the former Fulham man. He bounced around Europe on loan, but didn't find any success.

Johnson returned to MLS this season and ended up partnering Sounders. Injuries have plagued him, but he's had two successful games in a row.

That being said, it looks like he might not be partnering with Montero for much longer.

Per Miguel Gallo of VeaDeportes.com, Montero is being monitored by both Liverpool and Ajax. These are just rumours, but with goals like the one he scored yesterday, it might be tough to keep the Colombian forward in MLS for much longer.

In three full seasons with the Sounders, Montero has scored an impressive 37 goals and chipped in 20 assists in all competitions. That kind of goal return in MLS is impressive for a player who came into the league as a relatively unknown 22-year-old.

It's about time teams in Europe take a good look at him, because he has the whole package as a forward. He can pass, he finds space, he operates between the lines and he knows how to put the ball in the net from any distance, which is most important.

The Sounders' 2-0 win over the Galaxy snapped a six-game winless streak for Seattle against Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders: Rating the Galaxy Players
MLS News
Wednesday, 02 May 2012 23:38

The Los Angeles Galaxy were dancing with wolves on Wednesday night at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington, and the patchwork lineup sent by Bruce Arena was easy prey for a Seattle Sounders team in need of a league result against LA.

Seattle shutout the Galaxy 2-0 in a match that proved to be one-sided, despite the stat sheets suggesting an equal contest.

No star power leads to a bad result. And a bad result leads to poor ratings.

Bill Gaudette 5

Gaudette was beaten twice in the match by the scoring tandem of Eddie Johnson and Fredy Montero. He didn't make enough saves to acquit himself and has to be wondering just exactly what happened to the now fallen star known as Josh Saunders. It was not one of his best nights, and he can only hope that an improved performance against New York is in the books. He can only hope.

David Junior Lopes 4

Another off night for Lopes in the back line. Played out of position at times and couldn't stop Montero and Johnson from dealing irreversible damage.

Sean Franklin 4

Turned the ball over one too many times, and when you can't beat the Sisters of Mercy with this performance, it shows. Perhaps the nearest confessional might fix Franklin's invisible mojo.

A.J. DeLaGarza 5.5

Was out of position on the goal by Johnson but otherwise held his own. Strongest defender on the field for LA, as always.

Bryan Gaul 3

It was going to be a baptism by fire for rookie Bryan Gaul, and he didn't impress at all in his first start for the Gs. He lacked crossing ability and couldn't work a lot of magic with the ball at his feet. You sometimes see this from rookies who don't have a lot of experience and confidence. This is why he was a supplemental draft selection before the start of this season.

Juninho 4.5

Couldn't find a rhythm with Marcelo Sarvas. Still a work in progress in terms of chemistry between the two Brazilians.

Bryan Jordan 3

Jordan was not ready to make critical stops on the backline for LA. Seattle was in attack mode for all of 90 minutes and Jordan got torched early and often. In addition, his long passes were diabolical at best.

At least there's always the web design side of things.

Marcelo Sarvas 3.5

The play of Marcelo Sarvas was going to be a determining factor as to whether or not LA would at least draw with Seattle. Sarvas played very poorly in the midfield and couldn't mesh with Juninho. Might as well have gave up on trying to mark Fredy Montero. This is why Sarvas is a bench warmer first, starter second.

Chad Barrett 4

When you are the road team, nerves start to come in. When nerves start to come in, you play like Chad Barrett. When you play like Chad Barrett, you finish like Chad Barrett. When you finish like Chad Barrett, you get subbed. When you get subbed, you are frustrated. And when you are frustrated, you add another one to the loss column. Don't add another one to the loss column. Switch to cable with DIRECTV. Call 1-800-DIRECTV...or forget about this night and pray for a miracle on Saturday against New York.

Landon Donovan 6

Probably the only player who actually bothered to show up on Wednesday night and put on a brave face against Seattle for the Galaxy. It's embarrassing when, instead of working with veteran soldiers, you are stuck with Boy Scouts. Help will need to be on the way come Saturday.

Adam Cristman 4

Could not make the most of his possession. Had one chance on goal but missed wide.

Edson Buddle 4

Buddle, Cristman and Barrett had the false assumption that they could emulate Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Neither of these forwards have the footwork and cutting abilities that Messi and Ronaldo currently possess. Shoot first, show antics later.

Mike Magee 5

Magee had a number of volleys during his time off the bench, but couldn't show anything for it. When is that Magee Magic going to return? He is in a clear and visible slump.

Pat Noonan NR

Came into the match late, no rating given.

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders: 6 Things We Learned
MLS News
Wednesday, 02 May 2012 22:44

Bruce Arena is, for what it's worth, a very compulsive gambler. He hoped for a miracle by fielding a virtual B-team of starters and benchwarmers for the Los Angeles Galaxy against the Seattle Sounders...and lost, 2-0, at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Wash.

As the Galaxy slink back to the Home Depot Center for Saturday's contest with the New York Red Bulls, here are six things we learned from the midweek tilt in Seattle.

20 Best MLS Goals of All Time
MLS News
Wednesday, 02 May 2012 18:00

There have been hundreds of goals throughout the 17 seasons of Major League Soccer's existence.

Among all those goals, there are many memorable ones. Goals that will never be forgotten for reasons of importance, caliber or just dumb luck.

To narrow them down to the best 20 in history is difficult. I'm sure some were overlooked for the simple reason there is no video archive that's easily accessible.

With that said, this list, I believe, does do justice to the best goals we've seen in MLS. We may not agree on the ranking order, but there's no denying that these 20 goals are among the best.

And if there are some I missed, there is always the comment box below for you to share. Enjoy.

Del Piero and Raul: Who'd Be Better for MLS and Why
MLS News
Wednesday, 02 May 2012 04:35

As has become a pattern in the MLS, famous European players eventually decide that instead of trying to sit on a bench one more season with their current team, they'd rather finish their careers in America.

And now the headlines are slowly linking two more stalwarts of Champions League soccer to teams in the burgeoning American league.

They are Alessandro Del Piero of Italy and Spain's Raul.

Both are synonymous with success.

Del Piero has had a lifetime relationship with Juventus, experiencing the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

Raul was thought to be forever clad in the famous white of Real Madrid, only to be unceremoniously dumped when the second round of the Galaticos arrived.

In each case, MLS would be still be getting a very serviceable player, capable of scoring many goals and creating general mayhem for opposing defenses.

But which one would make the better addition for MLS? Let's try to figure this out.

MLS News

As MLS continues to grow in the world of football, plenty of its teams are looking for foreign talent to help bolster their squad. Ever since the DP rule was introduced in 2007, more and more clubs are taking the Designated Player path and signing big names in order to enhance their chances at claiming MLS glory.

There are currently twenty one players with this DP label in MLS, and I have grouped each one of these players into a specific category based on their 2012 performances so far. From those who are more than earning their paycheck (Thierry Henry) to those who aren't quite the fan favorites (Rafa Marquez), I have placed each DP into one of four groups that explains their current play this season.

Enjoy!

2012 Olympics: Pros and Cons of Picking David Beckham for Team GB
MLS News
Tuesday, 01 May 2012 05:45

David Beckham is sporting royalty in Great Britain, but while the public clamors for his inclusion in Team GB's historic soccer squad to compete at the 2012 London Olympics should not be underestimated, his place is not guaranteed.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Great Britain coach Stuart Pearce has been told by Olympics chairman Lord Coe to pick his squad purely on merit—and not be swayed by anything else.

Pearce is currently weighing whether to make Beckham one of his three overage players in the 16-team tournament this summer. To educate his decision, he will be in the stadium to watch Beckham play for L.A. Galaxy in Seattle on Wednesday night, on the same day the former England international turns 37.

This summer will mark the first time since 1971 that a men's football team representing Great Britain has taken to the field. Pearce will be their manager and it's his job to select a squad of 18 players, of which no more than three can have been born after January 1, 1989.

Here are the pros and cons of selecting Beckham in Team GB's squad as they seek to win a home gold medal.
