Dear New York Red Bulls Organization, What have you been up to lately? I think we have lost contact. It seems like while on your daunting journey to expand the global brand of the RBNY, you have been too busy to send back a letter or two to tell us what is going on. I know us fans are inferior to you and aren’t supposed to speak up, but while watching the team struggle to put up a fight on Wednesday, I felt it necessary to request an explanation. So if you can find the kindness in your heart, please answer a few questions. It will only take a minute. Let us start off with an easy one. Why are you so careless? It all started when you prioritized a cash-grab game in Montreal ahead of the regular season, resulting in the first home loss of the year to Chivas USA. I must admit I was a bit skeptical of the organization for temporarily giving up on the season as if IT was the exhibition. More importantly however, you gave up on the 16,365 in attendance on Saturday, who spent their hard earned money to watch what should have been an easy victory. Shameful, but I was willing to give you a second chance. And a third. And a fourth. I’ve given you so many chances that I am starting to lose count. In case you forgot some of your blunders so far this summer, here are a few of my favorites. 1. The German Trialist. Calling it a tease would be an understatement. But I am sure it drew a big laugh at the office. 2. Giving up on the USOC. Could we have at least gone out swinging? 3. Rost Signing. The missing piece is still MIA. 4. Emirates Cup. I wonder what surprises it will contain? You disappoint week in and week out, yet you wonder why RBA is 60 percent full on a weekly basis. It is about the fans. Yes, normal people and writers like me who can take the club to another level. For example, it is the Seattle supporters that make the Sounders more than just a soccer team in a rainy city. It is they who motivate the players on the field. They who are proud to be fans of the club. And they who make a difference. Rio Ferdinand tweeted last night to his one million followers after Manchester United played Seattle, “67000 for a friendly in USA...the people are warming to football over here nicely! Seattle is mad for football! #progress.” Now that is how you spread a brand! By keeping the fans happy and impressing with support. Not by wasting away the season and playing in meaningless friendlies. Hey NYRB, do you want to know what the missing piece is? We are standing right in front of you! P.S. You are running out of chances. P.P.S. We would have accepted a USOC trophy. P.P.P.S. Supporters Shield MLS Cup or Bust? Sincerely, The Missing Piece Read more MLS news on BleacherReport.com Source: Click Here

New York City - For the first half of Saturday's New York Red Bulls match against FC Dallas, Red Bull Arena will not have the ruckus that many are accustomed too as the South Ward has decided to watch the first half in silence. The South Ward which consists of the supporters clubs of the Viking Army, the Garden State Supporters (GSS) , and the Empire Supporters Club (ESC) are simply frustrated with some of the organization's recent decision. The Empire Supporters Club posted a letter explaining their decision this morning. It's mainly centered around the Red Bulls decisions regarding the team's recent United States Open Cup match against the Chicago Fire. To read the letter which was submitted to the New York Red Bulls: http://bit.ly/omaW4e Just to be clear, the South Ward protest isn't against the players, it's against the management. For Viking Army member Ralph "Chupi" Garcia, they're also protesting the recent dismissal of long-time New York Red Bulls Latino Communications Duo of Ernesto Motta and Roberto Sierra. A few days ago, Chupi reached out to me and informed me of the South Ward's decision to protest the first half of Saturday's match against FC Dallas. He also wanted to address the dismissal of Motta and Sierra but was concerned that I could face a retaliation from the Organization itself. I assured Chupi that should the Red Bulls Organization decide to revoke my Media Credentials over an article that I'm addressing a matter that their most loyal supporters have, I hope they're willing to punish Soccer America's Paul Gardner and Big Apple Soccer's Michael Lewis for their articles about the recent firing of Motta and Sierra. "I know these these guys bled Metrostars and Red Bull NY - have been here since day one and they wanted was to be here to help raise the MLS CUP," expressed Chupi. "They were our Latino ambassadors to the game here in the Tri-State area. "As a result of their dismissal, we are left with no voice or game broadcast for the Latino community as far as soccer goes. In my eyes they were very genuine in the way they handled themselves and treat us...THE FANS." There you have it, Saturday's match is already even more interesting because their most loyal supporters and it'll be interesting to hear how quiet Red Bull Arena is going to sound a half against one of the MLS best teams in FC Dallas. On a personal note, knowing both Ernesto and Robert from past interactions with them at Red Bull Arena, I want to wish both gentlemen the best of luck in their future endeavors. Along with their professionalism, they've always been courteous to the Red Bulls fans and have always taken the time to help with my education of Covering Soccer. When it's said and done, they will be missed at Red Bull Arena. En las palabras de Ernesto Motta to the South Ward: "Muchas gracias de corazón, que viva el futbol y su máxima expresión de alegría que es el GOL!" About the Empire Supporters Club The Empire Supporters Club (“ESC”) is the oldest supporters club in Major League Soccer, founded before the league itself in early 1995 in anticipation of a new professional franchise in New York/New Jersey. Reflecting the community they come from, the ESC is one of the most diverse supporter’s clubs in America, boasting members from every corner of the globe and of varied backgrounds. This unique make-up has influenced their style in the stands: Part South American Barra, part European Ultra and part British Supporter, with some local flavor thrown in. About Garden State Supporters Founded in 2005, Garden State Supporters, or Ultra GSS, is a supporters club in the American European "ULTRA" style based in the South Ward of Red Bull Arena in Section 133. About The Viking Army Supporters Club The Viking Army Supporters Club is a collection of boisterous Red Bull New York supporters who all share a tremendous passion for Red Bull soccer. The Viking Army provides a social outlet for soccer supporters to share common interests and to be a part of a larger community of sports fans with members all over the world. Viking Army SC is an official NJ non-profit corporation, and strives to work with charitable endeavors in the local community as well, mainly by supplying underprivileged children with proper soccer equipment. The club has worked with a variety of organizations with this goal in mind, including Kick for Nick and Balls Without Borders. Cesar Diaz covers Soccer for LatinoSports.com. Galaxy excited to clash with Man City For Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy, getting a victory against Manchester City will not be necessary on Sunday afternoon at the Home Depot Center.
I love any game that I could either watch or coach in that we don’t have to win,” Arena said of the tie, which is part of the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge. “I don’t get that many in my life. I enjoy that, and I think that’s how the players approach it and give their best effort.
“I’m really going to enjoy it this Sunday.”
So, does Mr. David Beckham think much of this match?
“No, because it’s Man City,” Beckham told LAGalaxy.com's Larry Morgan. “All joking aside, it’s going to be great for our fans to see some of their great players and a great experience for our team as well.
“There’s motivation in every game that we play It doesn’t matter whether we’re playing against Columbus, Real Madrid (a 4-1 winner last Saturday at the L.A. Coliseum) or Man City. It’s just another game and just a game I’m sure the players will enjoy.”
More on Becks' thoughts later.
“To see all the fans and how much they love it, it’s amazing. Immediately after the game you’re on cloud nine after matching up against some of these guys," added forward Mike Magee. “Sometimes I feel like when you first see it on the schedule, you wish you had that weekend off and the tendency is to think of it as a pain with all the league games.
"But when you get out there on the field and see all these guys you looked up, it’s hard to beat. It brings out the best in you, which is what you want.”
They will never be Man United, says Beckham
Now you can forgive Mr. Goldenballs for being a Manchester United homer. After all, he spent most of his playing career for the same club that slapped the Seattle Sounders by a touchdown on Wednesday night.
But in a recent article by the Guardian, he made it very clear that for everything Manchester City has done, they will never equal the accolades Manchester United have won over the years.
"Players have been bought and that does a lot for the club and for the team. But United have that history and it's not all about paying fortunes for players," Beckham told the Guardian's Daniel Taylor. "It's important the players get along with each other – that makes team spirit. As much as they have got the money to bring players in, sometimes that doesn't work. If they continue they will be a threat but there are no guarantees.
"I haven't been around their team and their squad and I wouldn't want to be around Man City. But if they continue to bring players in, then who knows? You saw it with Chelsea when Roman [Abramovich] arrived. They won two leagues and they won them on the trot. It works sometimes but hopefully it won't work at City."
Beckham admitted that the Home Depot Center will be packed on Sunday afternoon. And yes, Lalas Hill will be open.
"City coming here will be great for the fans," Beckham added. "They will see some great players. There is no extra motivation because it's Man City. It's not special to me because I am a Man Utd fan. They have some great players but they are never gonna be Man Utd."
Expect these Blues to be a motivated bunch as they continue their preseason en route to their first big contest, an FA Community Shield tie with...you guessed it, Manchester United.
Coincidence?

If there's one thing FC Dallas star Brek Shea is known for, it's his goofy hair. We know this because Shea's hair actually has its own Twitter account. Then again, Shea might just be more well known for his impressive ability to score goals at will. Actually, that probably is how most people know Shea. If that doesn't ring any bells, go ahead and take a look at the goal Shea scored on Wednesday night against Toronto FC. About three minutes after halftime, Shea took control of the ball, right around midfield, before cutting straight through the defense towards the goal. He released his shot from about 30 yards out, and it's a good thing nobody was in the way. The ball probably would have gone through them. Shea's strike found its way past Toronto keeper Stefan Frei, clanked off the left post and settled in the back of the net to give Dallas a 1-0 lead. The crowd packed into BMO Field was not pleased, and Shea's goal proved to be all Dallas needed to come away with a victory. It was Shea's ninth goal of the season, which at the time tied him for the MLS lead. Unfortunately, Thierry Henry would go on the notch his 10th in the New York Reds Bulls' 4-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids. Because of that, Shea will have to be content to be tied for second with Landon Donovan for the moment. Such a shame. The good news for Shea is that his goal was good enough to bump Dallas' record up to 11-5-5, inching them one step closer to the LA Galaxy for the Western Conference lead. Toronto, meanwhile, fell to 3-10-9, putting them comfortably in the cellar of the Eastern Conference. Making matters worse, Toronto has now been outscored 8-0 in its last three home games. Once upon a time, noble readers on the View from Victoria Street and on Bleacher Report, Sean Franklin was a Rookie of the Year for his dazzling play on defense. He wasn't seen as a scorer, but somebody who could dispossess his opponents at will with skillfull tenacity.
Never mind that Franklin was the first Los Angeles Galaxy player to be named MLS Rookie of the Year. Well, this former rookie scored his first league goal like the veteran he is today.
On Wednesday night at the Home Depot Center, a rebound off a David Beckham set piece found the feet of Franklin, who slammed it past Columbus Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer, who was having a solid night between the pipes up until that point.
The result: a 1-0 victory to the good for Bruce Arena's club, who improved to 11-2-9 as part of a fight to fend off challengers like the Seattle Sounders and FC Dallas for top honors in not only the MLS Western Conference, but all of Major League Soccer.
The Galaxy are four points ahead of both those teams mentioned, who have 38 points respectively.
Yes indeed, the Galaxy proved once again that the West is best. The proof is further strengthened by FC Dallas's win over Toronto FC and the Colorado Rapids running it up on the New York Red Bulls.
Franklin has his doubts as to whether or not he actually scored.
“I think it might have deflected and they might call it an own-goal,” Franklin told MLSSoccer.com's Luis Bueno. “I’m going to try and claim it as my first goal.”
Claim it, Sean. Who knows if you're going to be able to score on a good look from goal again.
“He had one in the first half that he could have scored on and he hit this one really well,” midfielder David Beckham said. “We needed it tonight. It was important for us to get the three points. Seattle was starting to creep up.”
Now, I am not only a Featured Columnist for the Galaxy; I have been a dedicated fan since 2002. And I reserve every right to be critical of the club I follow because high expectations make for good press for anyone that follows them.
While this will go as a loss for the Crew, it should be a moral victory, and I'll tell you why: Columbus should have been buried by the Galaxy tonight. It seems that every five minutes of so, within some definite interval, America's Hardest Working Team worked hard enough to give up corners left and right.
To their credit, Robert Warzycha's club did enough to deflect David Beckham's deliveries while revealing to the masses that their defense has more lives than a stray cat which, on average, has nine.
In the end, Columbus could only defend for so long, and Franklin's blast, which sent months and months of scoring futility down the tubes, was a scorcher that no one in a black and yellow jersey could touch. Not even Hesmer. Whether this becomes an MLS Goal of the Week nominee is anyone's guess.
I have to say that this wasn't a complete performance from the Galaxy. Earning a result is good, but in all honesty, it should have been along the lines of 3-0, 4-0, had a few deliveries from Beckham found a white jersey in sight.
Let's also tip our hat to Josh Saunders, who made up for a dismal effort against Seattle in the U.S. Open Cup by making all the stops and also walking the tightrope without falling into the abyss (that's also known as allowing howlers. You can look it up), Goalkeepers who want to be fixtures in this league must have short-term memories. On Wednesday, Saunders cleared his mind and settled in his zone, preventing would-be Chicken Thieves like Eddie Gaven.
Well done, that Puerto Rican international. Keep in mind that this is a side that was forced to throw liabilities like Jovan Kirovski into the starting lineup because Chris Birchall is suspended. Birchall will also be suspended against Vancouver.
Kirovski did the minimum to hold the fort down. I really didn't like his possession, and the best player on the LA Blues could do a better job of holding on to the ball. But that's what Kirovski is there for, in the presumed twilight of his career: hold the fort down until the reinforcements come back after Vancouver.
Another person who held the fort down was Gregg Berhalter. Defensively, he and A.J. DeLaGarza dictated the ball movement and frustrated the like of the Crew attack, who were unfortunate to see Andres Mendoza come down with an injury in the fourth minute.
You know, you never like to see your top scorer go down in disgraceful fashion minutes into a game. This is why I say it's a moral victory for Columbus: Los Angeles should have put the pedal to the medal on the Crew. Instead, wasteful finishing amidst textbook deliveries from Beckham prevented Columbus from being put to the sword early.
Only in the 70th minute did the onetime Rookie of the Year Sean Franklin end the silence and drill what local fans hope will not be the last goal in his career. Of course, he did record one in a match with the Puerto Rico Islanders in CONCACAF Champions League last season, but that is another story that is better off forgotten.
There is, of course, an international friendly with Manchester City on Sunday, and with the serious work out of the way for a few days, some fun and games are in order. Kickoff in the final game of the World Football Challenge for both sides is scheduled for July 24 at 1:00 p.m. PT/4:00 p.m. ET.
Then it's back to business for the Galaxy as they travel to Vancouver, British Columbia and Empire Field, where the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps await. Kickoff in BC is scheduled for Saturday, July 30 at 4:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised by TSN.
Ins and Outs
City were the underdogs, Birchall recalls
And speaking of Manchester City, Birchall had nothing but praise for a club he followed in the days of his youth in Stafford, England.
“As I was growing up, City were always the underdogs, the second team in Manchester to Man United, but they were usually a good team," Birchall told reporters. "They had a couple of years where they had a double relegation and went down to League 1, but they fought their way back and ever since then they have just gone from strength to strength.
"It’s remarkable to see how they have turned out the last few years, and now they’re fighting for the title and are in the Champions League.”
Birchall noted the new additions the Blues brought it to challenge their Old Trafford neighbors, among other Premier League opponents (and UEFA Champions League opponents, too).
"[Man City] brought in James Milner and David Silva last year, they just signed Gael Clichy from Arsenal and they have a number of England internationals, Gareth Barry, Joe Hart and Micah Richards," Birchall said. "We’re going to have to pay attention to all of their players and I think that in the next couple of years they are going to become one of the best teams in the world.
"Having the chance to play against one of the best teams in the Premier League is a privilege. They’ll be a great team to play against. All the Premier League teams are good and they’re one of the best so it is something that we look forward to and want to play well in.” Read more MLS news on BleacherReport.com Source: Click Here

A few days ago, the 2011 Women's World Cup came to a stunning and exhilarating conclusion. The U.S. Women's team lost a heartbreaking thriller on penalty kicks to the underdog Japanese. While not garnering as much attention as the Men's World Cup last summer, many sports fans in America followed the women's team closely, and were rewarded with great success from the squad. The team played with passion and great effort as it fought to a victory over world power Brazil and also overcame France. In these regards, the women's team reminds me of their male counterparts, who lost in a similarly emotional way in last summer's tournament, yet displayed grit and toughness. After the successes and failures of the United States' soccer squads in World Cups, the future of American soccer must be analyzed. One controversial question must be asked in this discussion. Does America deserve to be World Cup Champions? In countries such as Brazil, France, Spain, and Ghana, futbol is king. The sport dominates the athletic landscape on a level that Americans find difficult to grasp. The dedication and passion that fans in these countries have for their futbol teams is unparalleled. Nearly the entire world outside of America worships the sport. The fact that Americans call the sport "soccer" further demonstrates the mentality that Americans have concerning the sport. Unless there is a World Cup under way, most Americans simply ignore soccer, choosing to follow baseball, football and basketball instead. Behind hockey, this puts soccer fifth on the totem pole of importance. Ask the average American to name more than two players from the U.S. National Team and he or she would likely be dumbfounded. Many argue that the rise of the MLS demonstrates the growth of the sport in the U.S. However, MLS's growth is slow and is concentrated in a few areas of the country. To be clear, the players of the U.S. squads certainly deserve to win. They put in the work and have a passion for the sport like any other player in the world. It is the fans that do not deserve it. Ultimately, this discussion boils down to one thought: A country and its fans do not deserve to be the best in a sport that most care so little about. It may not be the patriotic thing to say, but Americans do not deserve a World Cup championship. Hopefully, some day we will. Read more MLS news on BleacherReport.com Source: Click Here

When one thinks of football in Manchester, England, only one team comes to mind: Manchester United.
But did you know there is another team in Manchester that also holds its own? It may not have the trophies and accolades, but it has its own rich tradition. Oh yeah, and they're the defending FA Cup Champions.
They are the Blues of the Manchester City Football Club. And they happen to be the last opponent for Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge.
Man City and Los Angeles will meet on July 24 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT/4:00 p.m. ET.
Roberto Mancini's Blues are a team that making huge investments to land some of the world's best footballers, with Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan as their owner. Last season, Man City finished with a record of 21-8-9 (71 points) and qualified for their first-ever UEFA Champions League appearance.
This match is the third of five preseason contests for Man City, which includes stops in San Francisco (against Club America), Vancouver (against the Vancouver Whitecaps) and Dublin (against a League of Ireland XI and Inter Milan in the Dublin Super Cup).
Carlos Tevez, Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli are Man City's top three goal-scorers. Last season, Tevez recorded 23 goals, Toure scored 11 and Balotelli recorded 10, each in all competitions.
Man City are coming off a 2-0 victory over Club America on July 16 in San Francisco and a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Empire Field in Vancouver.
Look for other players like Ryan McGivern and Shaun Wright-Phillips to contribute for Manchester City on Sunday.
Prediction
Manchester City are a Premier League club that will challenge their opponents left and right this year. I see them prevailing in an entertaining goal festival on Victoria Street.
Manchester City 3, Los Angeles Galaxy 2
INS AND OUTS
Aside from Man City, Columbus Remains the Focus
For the Galaxy, the real task lies in the match with the Columbus Crew on Wednesday night.
“The reality is all along we’ve said that Wednesday is the game that matters this week,” midfielder/team captain Landon Donovan said Monday to LAGalaxy.com's Larry Morgan. “It’s sandwiched between two kind of marquee games that maybe the fans and public think are more important, but the reality is this is the important game.
“We had to reorganize this morning and make sure mentally that we need to be prepared for Wednesday, and I think we’ll do a good job of that.”
Defender Sean Franklin tipped his hat to the Crew, who the Galaxy dominated last season home and away.
“They’ve proven to be one of the better teams in the East over the years,” Franklin said. “We just have to be ready. If we stick to our game plan, we’ll have a chance to win three points on Wednesday.
“We know our regular season comes first. These friendlies are for us and the fans to enjoy. We want to win them, but we also want to win our regular season games. Last weekend we’ve put away. It was fun to play that game [against Real Madrid], but it’s time to focus on the regular season. I think the team is ready to move forward and get this one on Wednesday.”
Franklin Called Up to All-Star Team
Aside from priorities with the Galaxy in league play, there is the All-Star Game with Manchester United that Franklin is excited to take part in.
“I’m looking forward to playing against some of the best players in the world,” Franklin told MLSsoccer.com. “This is just one of the things I get to check off on my list of what I want to accomplish throughout my career.”
Also called on to the list were Donovan and midfielder David Beckham.
“It’s definitely exciting being your first time,” Franklin added. "Those guys have done it numerous times. They’re used to it, but for me, I’m excited.
"Last year there was a lot of demand—and this year also—to get forward and I think last year I was up a lot and not playing as much defense as I should. This year I want to focus on being a defender first and then being an attacker second. My job is to defend first and if I get the opportunity to go forward, take them. I’m just taking it game by game, working on my game and getting better as a player.”
Adam Cristman...the Bailout Package?
In last week's set of sub-par performances against the Seattle Sounders and Real Madrid, Adam Cristman's star shined.
“In a friendly match and against an opponent like that, it’s in a different category,” Cristman said of the Real Madrid friendly to MLSSoccer.com's Luis Bueno. “But it’s definitely one of the better moments in my career for sure.”
Cristman admitted that it was a tough road just to get to the point where the dividends finally paid off.
“I’ve had a couple of tough years with injuries and it’s been a slow climb back in,” the Galaxy forward added. “I’m feeling better and better, getting more confident and feeling stronger, and hopefully it’s one more reason for the coaches to put me out on the field for league games.”
