The Return of Josh Saunders

For Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy, a surprising wave of good news came when it was revealed that goalkeeper John Saunders would be available to start against the Portland Timbers on Sunday (kickoff: 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET, KDOC and KWHY).

Saunders had gone through substance abuse training and was clean and sober heading into this week. He was in action on June 2 against the Portland Timbers reserves.

"It felt natural," Saunders told MLSSoccer.com's Luis Bueno. "It felt like what I'm supposed to be doing.

“Whenever your team’s not winning, you're always thinking about it. You’ve got to look at the positives. There’s a lot of guys who are healthy. We are a good group of people, and we know we can win games.”

For Arena, it was refreshing to know that Saunders was ready to do some work for once.

"He's done a good job, he's fit, he's mentally right," Arena remarked. "And obviously playing in the reserve game last weekend helped him."

More Reserve League Fun

Speaking of Reserve League, the Los Angeles Galaxy reserves blew past the Vancouver Whitecaps, 3-1. Jose Villareal, who rebounded from his injury earlier this season, scored a brace in the 47th and 86th minutes while Jack McBean added an insurance goal in the first minute of stoppage time,

Bryce Alderson scored in the 68th minute for the Whitecaps reserves.

Los Angeles' next Reserve League match will be on July 10 against Chivas USA. The Galaxy will be out for payback after the Goats gave them some bad medicine in the form of a 4-2 blowout defeat on April 2.
