This is Part 14 in a series of players who will play for the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2012. One stint in Major League Soccer may not be enough. Sometimes a second stint will come after spending time in the lower leagues of football and reaching success at those levels. Then the big boys will come calling for you to give you another opportunity to shine. Such is the case with goalkeeper Bill Gaudette, who earns a second opportunity to play in MLS, this time as a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Gaudette has enjoyed a career that has seen success in Puerto Rico and this season, he looks to improve on his skills as a netminder for MLS's glamor club. Bill Gaudette was born on Sept. 14, 1981 in Hummelstown, Penn., a small town of 4,360 people outside of the state capital, Harrisburg. At St. John's University, he led the Red Storm to a 43-13-12 record from 2001 through 2004 while playing for USL Premier Development League side Brooklyn Knights. Gaudette was selected as the ninth overall draft pick by the Columbus Crew in the 2005 MLS Supplemental draft and was with the club through 2007. However, the lack of playing time forced Gaudette to consider playing at the lower leagues in order to get more minutes. And that's when Colin Clarke, manager of the Puerto Rico Islanders, stepped in. In 2008, the Islanders acquired Gaudette, and the results were immense. That season, they won the Commisioner's Cup, given to the winner with the best regular season record in the old USL First Division. Puerto Rico would go on to the USL First Division final, where they would lose to future MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. During the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League Gaudette established a reputation as one of the top shot-stoppers in the region. He made saves from all directions and using his athletic ability to pace Puerto Rico to the semifinals of the Championship Round, where they were eliminated by Cruz Azul 4-2 on penalties after a 4-4 aggregate scoreline. Gaudette would also shine in the10-11 CONCACAF Champions League, primarily in the preliminary round against an opponent that would soon covet him: the Los Angeles Galaxy. Gaudette was unstoppable in the first leg, as Puerto Rico blew apart the G's 4-1. While they did drop the second leg 2-1, the result was more than enough to pace the Islanders to the Group Stage. In 2010, the Islanders barely made the playoffs in the USSF Division 2 Pro League, but thanks to the clutch shot-stopping ability of Gaudette, they upset the Rochester Rhinos, Whitecaps and Carolina RailHawks en route to the title; the club's first major piece of silverware since winning the CFU Club Championship earlier in the year. Gaudette would earn nine appearances as a member of the Montreal Impact before considering trying out for the Galaxy, who was in search of a third goalkeeper. After impressing the coaches during preseason, Gaudette was signed to a contract by the club he once vanquished in CONCACAF Champions League play. To be the best, you have to beat the best. For Gaudette, the opportunity to now play with one of the top clubs in MLS is an honor brought on by hard work and sacrifice in the lower leagues. And now he has an opportunity to make the most of his second opportunity. Read more MLS news on BleacherReport.com Source: Click Here
