Columbus Crew Match Postponed After Fan Reportedly Struck by Lightning
MLS News
Saturday, 28 June 2014 20:02

Updates from Sunday, June 29

The MLS released a statement Sunday from executive vice president Dan Courtemanche regarding the postponement of last night's match:

Due to the inclement weather in Ohio and the unfortunate incident that occurred in the parking lot outside Columbus Crew Stadium last night, Major League Soccer made the decision to postpone the game between FC Dallas and the Columbus Crew. The game has been rescheduled to 2 pm ET today.

The health and safety of our fans is always our top priority, and we believe it was the right decision to postpone the match. The decision to reschedule the game to Sunday afternoon was made by the League. When matches are postponed, MLS' standard policy is to reschedule the game to the next day if possible. This policy is similar to other professional sports leagues. We apologize for any inconvenience to the fans.

Original Text

Saturday night's match between the Columbus Crew and FC Dallas had to be canceled under scary conditions, as a fan was struck by lightning before the match.

Adam Jardy of The Columbus Dispatch had some of the details:

A fan was struck by lightning in the parking lot outside of Crew Stadium before tonight's game against FC Dallas, multiple eyewitnesses told The Dispatch. The Dispatch has learned that the man is still alive after being transported to a hospital.

The Crew game has been canceled "for reasons beyond our control," according to an announcement given to fans at Crew Stadium. No make-up date has been announced.

According to The Dispatch, a "massive lightning bolt" struck Crew Stadium about 15 minutes before the game was set to start. The Crew announced on their website, "Tonight's Crew contest is being postponed due to extenuating circumstances. Tickets will be honored for the re-scheduled match."

If you've ever wondered why teams take thunderstorms and lightning so seriously during outdoor sporting events, what happened Saturday in Columbus illustrates the true danger they can pose. The Dispatch reported the man was brought to the hospital is critical condition.

Just yesterday, Kevin Ambrose of The Washington Post wrote about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's lightning safety workshop at the University of Maryland, where the topic of lightning strikes was a major point of discussion, namely the dangers of a "a super bolt" hitting a stadium and the catastrophic effects it could produce if that stadium wasn't properly evacuated.

And we've seen major sporting events delayed a significant amount of time due to lightning in the past. Baseball games are regularly delayed or postponed, but this September the NFL's opening game between the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos was delayed over 30 minutes due to lightning.

Generally, organizations do a wonderful job of handling these types of situations. What is so scary in this case was that the fan was reportedly struck in the parking lot and that the bolt hit the stadium and reverberated around the near vicinity.

It's a rare occurrence that something like this happens, but certainly a cautionary tale as well.

Jermain Defoe Embarrassed After Free-Kick Row When Gilberto Scores Wonder Goal
MLS News
Saturday, 28 June 2014 04:25

Jermain Defoe has been on fire since joining MLS side Toronto FC, tallying eight goals and an assist in his nine appearances to date.

But when the former Tottenham man attempted to take a free-kick away from fellow designated player Gilberto in their match against New York Red Bulls, things got heated. Defoe angrily knocked the ball out of Gilberto's hands, demanding he be the one to take the kick.

Instead, Gilberto blasted an absolute screamer past the keeper (his first MLS goal), and all was instantly forgiven.

USMNT Performance in World Cup Is Validating Quality of MLS
MLS News
Monday, 23 June 2014 11:53

When Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley returned to Major League Soccer this past year after long stints in Europe, many fans of the United States men’s national team immediately assumed the moves would have disastrous consequences for the U.S.’s hopes in the 2014 World Cup.

In addition to Bradley and Dempsey, some of the U.S.’s budding talents, like Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and Omar Gonzalez have made the decision over the past few years to forego European offers and instead re-signed with their respective MLS sides.

Those decisions were questioned as well, with many U.S. fans assuming that staying in MLS would squash their development as players.

For years, most Americans have harbored an inferiority complex about MLS (and the game in general), assuming the only path to success went through development in European leagues, through European styles of play and with European coaches.

That viewpoint is still the belief of many Europeans as well.

During a recent World Cup broadcast, ESPN commentator Steve McManaman insinuated that MLS lies somewhere between a U-10 league and the English Premier League, and British journalist Piers Morgan recently continued the erroneous belief that the term “soccer” was a word developed and used solely by Americans (the word originates from England as an abbreviation for association football).

However, watching the U.S.’s first two World Cup group-stage matches against Ghana and Portugal, it has been obvious that the team’s players from MLS (which also includes Kyle Beckerman, Nick Rimando, Brad Davis, Chris Wondolowski and DeAndre Yedlin) have performed as well as their American counterparts who play abroad.

In total, the U.S. has four goals and three assists in the tournament. Two of the four goals have been scored by Dempsey, who plays for the Seattle Sounders, and two of the three assists have been earned by Zusi, who plays for Sporting Kansas City.

The U.S.’s most consistent defender in the tournament has been Matt Besler, who also plays for Sporting Kansas City, and the team’s holding midfielder, Kyle Beckerman (who has been a revelation in the U.S. midfield), is an MLS lifer.

And although he only played a minor substitute role in the game against Portugal, DeAndre Yedlin certainly added a spark to the U.S. side in that match.

Bradley’s performances have certainly been a mixed bag, and Gonzalez has suffered through a recent drop in form, but those performances have certainly been no worse than the mistakes of their foreign-based teammates.

Fabian Johnson, who plays in the German Bundesliga, has had a very bright tournament, but it was also his man—who he failed to track—who scored Ghana’s lone goal against the U.S.

Against Ghana, Liga MX defender DaMarcus Beasley had a few shaky moments, and John Anthony Brooks, who also plays in the Bundesliga and who scored the dramatic late-winner in that game, almost gifted Ghana an equalizer only minutes after entering the game with a poor clearance.

Against Portugal, the normally stout Geoff Cameron, who plays in the English Premier League, cost the U.S. both goals—one with a poor clearance and one when he didn’t track a runner into the box.

Aron Johannsson, who enjoyed a career season in the Netherlands this past season, was so ineffective at forward against Ghana that he lost his spot for the game against Portugal. And, finally, Alejandro Bedoya, who plays in France’s Ligue 1, was absent from any sort of attacking presence against Portugal.

While MLS still has many things it could do better and while it is still a growing league, the performances of its players on the USMNT in this World Cup offers proof that the league is capable of producing world-class international players. And the performance of the U.S.’s foreign-based players, mistakes and all, proves that playing in Europe is not an end-all-be-all for success at the international level.

After two games, against the traditional U.S.-killer Ghana and the No. 4-ranked Portugal, the Americans have secured four points. They are a favorite to advance out of the consensus “group of death” heading into their final match of group play and they’ve done it with a series of strong performances from their MLS players.

Julio Cesar Gets Tearful About Toronto FC Exit, Despite Making Just 7 Starts
MLS News
Saturday, 07 June 2014 05:10

Footballers often get accused of being unemotional and disconnected from their teams—but nobody is going to accuse Julio Cesar of that as he left Toronto FC.

The Brazil goalkeeper's loan spell came to an end so he could join up with the national team for the World Cup, and Toronto  marked the occasion with a piano-backed heart-tugging video.

Cesar made just seven starts while on loan from Queens Park Rangers, but clearly his spell in Canada left an impression on him.

And when the team got him a framed picture he likes, the waterworks began.

According to MLS Soccer, QPR are set to bring him back for their Premier League campaign after the World Cup ends.

But as Dirty Tackle notes, the one thing none of this addresses is what the home-made Wheel of Fortune wheel is there for.
