New York Red Bulls Erase Ghosts of Past Postseason Failures with Series Win
MLS News
Saturday, 08 November 2014 16:03

After years of countless playoff failures, the New York Red Bulls were able to advance out of the conference semifinal round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Mike Petke's side did lose 2-1 on the day to D.C. United, but it advanced on aggregate thanks to two goals in the first leg a week ago.

Although New York did see Roy Miller commit a hideous high challenge to earn a red card in the 79th minute, which reminded many of mistakes made in the past, the Red Bulls were able to fight off their past postseason demons.

There was also the late goal scored by Sean Franklin, but that came too late in the match to concern the Red Bulls due to the away goal they earned in the 57th minute. The win handed the Red Bulls a spot in their first conference final since 2008, when they beat Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference final.

The player who handed New York a comfortable cushion on aggregate was Peguy Luyindula, who cashed in on a terrific cross from Thierry Henry. It was Henry who was supposed to come to New York and bring the franchise to the promised land. But it was not until the capture of the 2013 Supporters' Shield that the Frenchman delivered something truly meaningful to the club.

Despite being the best team in the regular season a year ago, the Red Bulls went down an all-too-familiar path in the conference semifinal round and lost to the Houston Dynamo.

The Red Bulls entered the MLS Cup playoffs this season as the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. They were seen as an outside favorite to advance past D.C., which put together a tremendous worst-to-first turnaround in the regular season. As Goal.com's Seth Vertelney points out, the Red Bulls won as the wild card a year after losing to the wild-card team.

But as we all know in any American sport, seedings are thrown out the window when the playoffs begin. Just like so many American teams in the last decade, the Red Bulls earned momentum from the MLS version of the wild-card game.

The Red Bulls began to control their own playoff momentum with a 2-1 win over defending champion Sporting Kansas City in the knockout round on Oct. 30. The win was earned thanks to a tactical call made by Petke to enter Luyindula into the match.

Luyindula played a role in creating both goals scored by Bradley Wright-Phillips in the final 13 minutes of the match to earn the second home win in franchise playoff history.

The second win in four days at Red Bull Arena came in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semifinal, as New York dominated its longtime rival thanks to the efforts of Henry. The former Arsenal and Barcelona player assisted on both goals in the 2-0 win to hand his side a sizable advantage.

It was Henry who once again played a role in delivering the knockout punch, as his cross from the left side of the pitch found Luyindula for his 57th-minute strike. Luyindula has two goals and two assists in his three playoff matches, per MLSSoccer.com's Franco Panizo:

The win marked only the third playoff series win in the club's 19-year history. It did make it all the way to the MLS Cup final in 2008 before losing 3-1 to Columbus in California.

With an attack firing on all cylinders and a manager playing all the right cards, the Red Bulls do stand a chance against either New England or Columbus in the next round. Advancing will not be an easy task, but they carry a ton of momentum at the moment.

They will be without Miller at left back, but that may seem like a minor deduction to the lineup if Petke can get the best out of Ambroise Oyongo.  Petke has proven with his usage of Luyindula over the last few weeks that he has a terrific understanding of his players and what roles they are best suited for.

If the next round goes just like the Red Bulls want it to, we could be quieting the talk of their past failures for good to focus on their newfound success.

LA Galaxy vs. Real Salt Lake: Key Issues That Will Shape MLS Semifinal Game
MLS News
Saturday, 08 November 2014 00:27

After 90 minutes of scoreless play, Real Salt Lake and the LA Galaxy will enter the second leg of their Western Conference semifinal with everything to play for.

RSL desperately tried to sneak out an advantage at home in the first leg, but LA 'keeper Jaime Penedo was too good in between the pipes at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Although they didn't score, Jeff Cassar's side did hold the Galaxy to zero goals, which is crucial given the institution of away goals for this season.

With so much left to play for at StubHub Center Sunday night, we opted to take a look at some of the key issues surrounding the star-studded affair.

MLS Cup Playoffs 2014: Schedule and Predictions for Conference Semifinal Battles
MLS News
Wednesday, 05 November 2014 09:00

Halfway through the conference semifinals in the MLS Cup Playoffs, it seems like we could be set for a few upsets.

Each matchup features a two-legged battle with an aggregate score, which means everyone is still alive after the first set of matches. However, one No. 1 seed is currently facing a two-goal deficit while the other could only draw in the first contest.

If these teams do not come back with strong performances in the second leg, fans could be in for a surprise this postseason.

Here is a look at what to watch for in each match, with predictions for which teams will battle in the conference finals.

Eastern Conference

After a 2-0 defeat at the hands of New York Red Bulls, D.C. United are in serious trouble. The team with the most points in the Eastern Conference could be headed out of the playoffs in the first round.

Bradley Wright-Phillips continued his campaign as the top scorer in the league this season, putting himself in rare territory, as Paul Carr of ESPN FC noted:

Meanwhile, the two goals in the first match were set up by the legendary Thierry Henry, which impressed Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated:

However, it is important to note New York had much more success at home this season. While the squad had 38 goals at home in 2014, it only managed 17 on the road. The minus-10 goal differential in road games was the worst of any playoff team.

Watch for D.C. United to come back with some much better defense at RFK Stadium in the return leg as the team keeps the Red Bulls off the scoresheet. Fabian Espindola and Eddie Johnson will then do their part to at least even up the score with goals of their own.

A 2-0 score would send the match into extra time and eventually penalty kicks, and the home team has what it takes to pull out the win.

Prediction: D.C. United wins match 2-0; D.C. United win 2-2 aggregate in penalty kicks

Columbus Crew entered the first matchup extremely confident but put up a dud against the New England Revolution, losing 4-2 at home.

Crew head coach Gregg Berhalter was especially disappointed in the effort on display, via Andrew King of MLSSoccer.com:

We talked a good game this week, and we didn't play a good game this weekend, and that's an issue to me. We're talking about who we are and what we do, and to me it's about executing; that's what's most important. The last thing I saw today, especially in the first half, was execution. It was the reverse of that. And that's disappointing to me.

New England did not exactly dominate the match, but while Columbus worked on maintaining possession, the Revolution were aggressive around the net and took advantage of opportunities.

Charlie Davies came through with a brace, while Lee Nguyen continued to show why he is one of the most underrated players in the league.

In the second match, Columbus will need to either outscore its opponent by three goals or score at least four of its own with a two-goal differential. This simply does not seem likely after what we saw in the first match.

Look for the home squad to stay conservative to keep it low scoring and eventually leave with a win.

Prediction: Columbus Crew win match 1-0; New England Revolution win aggregate 4-3

Western Conference

While FC Dallas were able to keep things even against the Seattle Sounders, advancing to the next round will not be easy. In fact, allowing a 1-1 draw gives the club surprisingly little chance of winning the matchup.

Going into the second leg, Seattle will need to earn any win or even just a scoreless draw in order to advance. Considering how good the squad is at home, you can almost assume this will come true on Monday.

The Sounders won 12 of their 17 matches at home this year, while FC Dallas earned only four victories on the road all season. A lot of this is thanks to the fan base that keeps showing up in bunches, as Don Ruiz of The News Tribune noted:

You can imagine the CenturyLink Field crowd will be as filled up as it is for a Seahawks game as the fans will their team to victory.

Of course, the elite talent throughout the lineup will also help, as Clint Dempsey looks to make an impact alongside midfielder Osvaldo Alonso. Although the defense can be a bit inconsistent, the team should be able to hold up well enough to earn the win.

Prediction: Seattle Sounders win match 1-0; Seattle Sounders win aggregate 2-1

As good as the Seattle Sounders have been at home, the Los Angeles Galaxy have been even better with 40 points out of a possible 51, including a plus-30 goal differential. However, this does not mean it is impossible to beat them.

Los Angeles Galaxy might have the big names on the roster like Landon Donovan, Omar Gonzalez, Robbie Keane and others. However, Real Salt Lake did a great job playing like a team to give their opponent everything they could handle in the first match.

Salt Lake took 16 shots, with six of them on net, putting a lot of pressure on goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. While he was able to stop them all to keep the scoreless draw, he might not be as fortunate next time out.

Meanwhile, Andrew Das of The New York Times believes this type of play can continue on the road in the next match:

Javier Morales has done an excellent job of creating opportunities for himself and others all season long, and this should continue in the playoffs.

While the Galaxy could end up scoring themselves, any sort of scoring draw will be enough for Real Salt Lake to advance. Although this is not an easy task on the road, they should be able to pull off the upset in this one.

Prediction: 1-1 draw; Real Salt Lake wins 1-1 in aggregate (away goals rule)

Promotion, Relegation and Socialism: Why Pro/Rel Is a Bad Fit for MLS
MLS News
Tuesday, 04 November 2014 15:12

Recently, United States Mens National Team manager Jurgen Klinsmann stirred the pot when he openly questioned the competitiveness of MLS.

Speaking to reporters in a press conference, Klinsmann highlighted the lack of a promotion-relegation system as contributing to the lesser competition:

I’m a deep believer in (the) promotion-relegation system. So it’s not up to me to say there should be MLS and the second division should be NASL, and there should be promotion-relegation. I just wish that we had a system in place where all the young players and all the players in general know that there’s a next higher level and there’s a lower level. If I play a bad season, then the lower level is waiting for me. If I play a very, very good season, then there’s the chance to go up and play at one point whatever you describe then as the highest level.

Some critics, including Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News, defended the MLS and accused Klinsmann of "Eurosnobbery."

It's an ironic criticism considering MLS is modeled on the same principles as European socialism.

American sports leagues—including MLS—employ the opposite of the pro/rel model: Instead of demoting the dregs, they are rewarded with high draft picks. And the results are often perverse. The NBA wouldn't have a tanking problem if the Sixers had to spend the next season in the D-League.

Pro/rel leagues do not have such a safety net and are therefore more intensely competitive, especially at the bottom. Games between struggling sides have real consequences for the loser.

On the other side of the ledger, teams from the second division—a role most likely played by NASL if MLS adopted pro/rel—can dream about promotion into the big leagues.

Now, which system sounds more American?

Not only does it promote social welfare in the form of high draft picks for the poor, MLS—like the NFL, NBA and NHL—caps salaries and redistributes revenue equally among its 19 teams. Outside of the context of sports, these are principles that make conservative capitalists cringe.

But that's the way American leagues are constructed. The kill-or-be-killed pro/rel system is foreign to the socialist landscape of domestic sports.

The MLS is far too risk-averse for pro/rel. The NYCFC ownership group recently paid a $100 million franchise fee to join MLS. With the league still in its relative infancy, prospective owners would be deterred from making that kind of investment if relegation—and therefore exclusion from the revenue-sharing pool—were a real possibility.

Relegation also presents a risk for television partners who would fear losing a major market—say, New York of Los Angeles—to relegation, therefore driving down the price of MLS broadcast rights and stunting the economic growth of the league.

It makes sense for the MLS to limit risk as the league continues to grow during its incubatory phase. Risk inheres instability, and instability threatens the popularity and development of American soccer.

MLS doesn't have the diehard fan support of European countries, where fans will continue to support teams that have been relegated to lower divisions.

As American soccer grows, there will be a reduced need for ensuring stability. Bigger clubs will be able to sustain support through a relegation period, and owners will be less risk-averse as the value of their sports properties increases. Pro/rel may be a foreign concept, but it will be suitable in a thriving MLS.

But now is not the time. Klinsmann may lament the lesser competition under the league's current structure, but right now the league needs growth and stability more than it needs the thrills and intensity of pro/rel.

Simply put, the MLS is not quite ready for the cutthroat capitalism of the European model.
