MLS News
Sunday, 14 June 2015 15:56

Columbus Crew SC had to wait out a two-plus-hour storm delay before Saturday's match against the LA Galaxy. Instead of just sitting around, the team decided to put its time to good use and attempt the header challenge.

Thanks to teamwork and great touches, the Crew pulled it off. Once the ball made it into the bucket, the locker room erupted.

The Crew and Galaxy would play to a 1-1 draw once the storm finally passed.

Cyle Larin, Tesho Akindele Give Canada Men's National Team Hope for the Future
MLS News
Sunday, 14 June 2015 09:51

Canada's men's national team head coach Benito Floro was hired to usher in a new generation of Canadian players. Floro has since included the likes of the Vancouver Whitecaps' Russell Teibert, Toronto FC's Jonathan Osorio and West Ham's Doneil Henry. The Les Rouges haven't had a talismanic striker for a few years, but those days are over.

Orlando City SC forward Cyle Larin and FC Dallas' Tesho Akindele both started against Dominica in the first leg of their second-round World Cup qualifying matchup on Thursday. It was Akindele's senior debut, which officially tied him to Canada.

Larin bagged his second goal for Canada in the win, and Teibert converted the winner from the penalty spot to secure the 2-0 victory. Dominica is not a soccer hotbed, but it was significant seeing two youngsters scoring for the Canadians.

Akindele didn't get on the scoresheet, but he still impressed on Thursday night. He was involved in the buildup and showed off his tremendous work rate on both sides of the pitch.

Seeing Akindele, Larin and Teibert clicking up front was a far cry from a year ago, when Canada was snapping a 14-month scoring drought.

With the Gold Cup beginning on July 7, with Larin and Akindele in the ranks, Canada actually has a chance of progressing to the knockout stages. It will be difficult with Costa Rica, Jamaica and El Salvador in its group, but it's not an impossible task.

Larin—the first overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft—is only going to improve as he earns more minutes with Orlando. The 20-year-old already has 5 goals in 11 appearances, which is a splendid output for a rookie.

Akindele, 2014's MLS Rookie of the Year, has been a regular starter for Dallas so far this season. He's appeared in every match for the Hoops in 2015, scoring three goals in the process. The 23-year-old has played on both flanks, as a No. 10 and as a lone striker, which demonstrates his tactical flexibility.

Teibert has also been deployed in several different positions over the years with the Whitecaps. He's a natural winger but was converted to left-back in 2011. He eventually moved to the right side as an attack-minded forward before settling in the heart of midfield beside Matias Laba.

The Whitecaps academy graduate has a tenacious attitude and has already worn the captain's armband for Vancouver at just 22 years old. His maturity has clearly paid dividends now that he's become a key player for head coach Carl Robinson.

Teibert normally plays as a No. 10 or out wide for his country, but he has the speed, technique and vision to excel in an advanced role. He can also track back and defend, which gives the back line some relief.

Osorio is a regular for TFC, while defender Karl Ouimette has recently shown improvement with the New York Red Bulls. Henry is also poised for greatness after securing a move to the Premier League.

Though it's pleasing for Canadians to see these young players coming through the national team, the squad is incomplete compared to CONCACAF rivals.

Milan Borjan is a decent shot-stopper, but he doesn't engender the confidence top-tier CONCACAF goalkeepers do for the U.S. and Mexico, among others. This was evident against Dominica when he was sent off for handling the ball outside the box.

Eighteen-year-old Whitecaps homegrown product Marco Carducci was a standout in last year's Canadian Championship semifinals against TFC. Carducci is a potential option for the future, but he needs more competitive games under his belt to solidify himself as Canada's No. 1.

Midfielder Julian De Guzman, now 34 years old, also looks out of his element. However, there isn't a viable replacement with his level of experience who can claim his spot.

Atiba Hutchinson is still one of the nation's best players, but he's 32 years old. Columbus Crew winger Ethan Finlay could be a possible replacement if he decides to represent Canada, but he's still on the fence.

Despite those concerns, there are several talented Canadian youngsters coming through MLS academies. Now that Vancouver, Toronto and the Montreal Impact have USL affiliates, those kids will be able to play meaningful games and push for a first-team spot.

It may take a few years for the national team to reap those rewards, but with the young nucleus already in place, the future is finally looking bright for Canadian soccer.

Why Sporting Kansas City's Benny Feilhaber Deserves a USMNT Call-Up
MLS News
Friday, 12 June 2015 17:13

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber has arguably been the best playmaker in MLS this season, recording a league-high seven assists along with the Columbus Crew's Ethan Finlay. However, it wasn't enough to convince U.S. men's national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann to add Feilhaber to his provisional Gold Cup roster.

Klinsmann's 35-man squad has plenty of depth in midfield. However, the inclusion of Feilhaber would give the U.S. some creativity it desperately lacked at the World Cup.

The Guardian's Kristan Heneage asked Feilhaber about the omission. The Sporting KC midfielder was just as baffled as everyone else by Klinsmann's decision:

I don’t expect to get called in, unfortunately. It would be big surprise for me. I would take [a call-up] by the horns and prove it to Jürgen and myself that I belong with that group. I actually wish someone in the media would ask him that question to see if he has an answer. It would help me out. You think about it and you kind of wonder [why you’re not there]. It’s only human. You think what is missing for you to get that opportunity. In the last two, three years, I’ve spoken to Jürgen and he’s told me things I’ve needed to improve on and I’ve taken it very seriously.

Feilhaber also admitted that his prospects of joining the USMNT also depend on the coach's system and his form, but he meets these criteria.

Feilhaber can seamlessly fit into Klinsmann's diamond midfield. He would ease some pressure off Michael Bradley and can help break down defenses with his passing. This would also allow Bradley to roam up and down the pitch.

The likes of Mix Diskerud and Alejandro Bedoya highlight the midfielders on the roster. They're talented players, but they don't have Feilhaber's creativity or passing abilities.

Besides Bradley, the only other player on the roster who has similar vision and technique is New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen. However, the 2014 MVP candidate dealt with injuries at the start of the season and is now just starting to regain his old form.

Chemistry is also a big plus with the addition of Feilhaber. It's always tough to develop an understanding within a national team because the players are all members of different clubs, but that becomes less of an issue with Feilhaber in the squad.

Defender Matt Besler and winger Graham Zusi are both teammates of Feilhaber's, so slotting the 30-year-old beside Zusi could do wonders for the U.S. Both players know where each other will be, and they understand each other's strengths and weaknesses.

The same can be said with Besler. If the center back has to make an interception or clearance, he'll know where Feilhaber is, pass it to him and let the midfielder transition forward.

Diskerud is effective in a similar role, but he doesn't attempt as many long balls. The NYCFC midfielder averages 2.4 per game, per WhoScored.com, compared to Feilhaber's 3.3. Nguyen's average of 3.6 is higher than both, but his overall accuracy is lower. In order to counterattack effectively, the midfielders have to be able to execute longer passes.

Some would argue that Feilhaber shouldn't be included in the USMNT because of his age. He's 30, which means his agility will start to decline in a few years. However, the U.S. international will be 33 during the 2018 World Cup and can still be an attacking threat for Klinsmann if the USA needs a goal.

Teams call up their best players to give themselves the best chance at winning tournaments. That's why Klinsmann's decision to leave Landon Donovan at home for the 2014 World Cup was so odd, especially when the USMNT struggled to score in almost every game.

It's ludicrous for one of MLS' best playmakers to be omitted from the USMNT roster. If Klinsmann wants a more efficient attack, he must start monitoring Feilhaber.

Sounders Reserve Player Gets Red Card for Kicking Opponent in Groin
MLS News
Friday, 12 June 2015 09:14

Although some red cards are questionable or controversial, there's no doubt that the Seattle Sounders FC 2's Sergio Mota deserved this one.

During Thursday's game between the Sounders 2 and the LA Galaxy II, Mota received a straight red card for kicking an opponent in the groin with both of his cleated feet.

Ouch. Just ouch.

Mota clearly deserved a red card for his actions. Now, he must wait to see if there's any further discipline.

Seattle Sounders FC vs. Sporting KC Live Blog: Instant Reactions and Analysis
MLS News
Saturday, 06 June 2015 17:26

Sporting Kansas City defeated Seattle Sounders FC in a wild finish by a score of 1-0 at Sporting Park.

The sole goal of the match occurred when Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei got called for a penalty inside the box after a collision with SKC forward Dom Dwyer. SKC midfielder Benny Feilhaber nailed the winning goal on a penalty kick to give his team the victory.

The Sounders had their fair share of chances despite the absences of star players Obafemi Martins and Clint Dempsey. Seattle midfielder Lamar Neagle appeared to score the go-ahead goal to begin the second half before an offsides call negated the score.

With the victory, SKC moves up to second place in the MLS Western Conference standings, and just two points behind the conference-leading Sounders.

SKC will play its next MLS game on June 21 against Real Salt Lake. The Sounders will play FC Dallas on June 13.
