Real Salt Lake Making a Statement Early in Major League Soccer Season
MLS News
Sunday, 18 March 2012 18:09

Real Salt Lake is proving that they are the team to beat in Major League Soccer this season.

In its two matches so far this year, Real Salt Lake has dominated two of the league's most popular teams and held their opponents' international superstars to frustrating performances.

Following a season-opening victory on the road against the defending MLS Cup Champion Los Angeles Galaxy, Real Salt Lake returned home and easily took care of the New York Red Bulls.

Although head coach Jason Kreis does not consider any of his contributing players to be "second-string" guys, Real Salt Lake is finding success with several key players and usual starters on the bench due to injuries.

With Nat Borchers not playing in either of the two opening matches and usual scoring threats Alvaro Saborio and Javier Morales coming in as second-half substitutions, players like Chris Schuler and Paulo Jr. have stepped up to help the team to prove that the "team is the star" concept employed by Kreis can be successful.

In addition to Schuler and Paulo Jr., other players are stepping up at the right time as well.

Defender Tony Beltran and midfielder Ned Grabavoy have both played well in both matches, and striker Fabian Espindola is finishing his scoring chances.

The team has allowed only one goal against the likes of Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane, David Beckham and Thierry Henry.

Real Salt Lake now has the opportunity to put more points in the win column, as it plays three of its next four matches at home.

The team also gets a chance to continue to prove that their reaching the late stages of the Western Conference Finals last season was well-deserved and that they are the team to beat in Major League Soccer.

MLS 2012: New England Revolution Season Introduction
MLS News
Sunday, 18 March 2012 07:57

The New England Revolution ended its 2011 season in the same forgettable manner that had preceded all year long. A disappointing 2-2 draw against Toronto ended a dismal campaign that saw the Revs finish dead last.

Worse still, longtime coach Steve Nicol left the team after being a fixture on the New England sideline for a decade.

With the 2012 season now two games in, little seems to have changed. Still, a bottoming-out last season was undoubtedly a sobering experience.

The silver lining to such a disaster is the change it caused, and Revs fans are hoping that starts to reflect in the results.

Sporting Kansas City Punishes 10-Man New England Revolution with 3-0 Win
MLS News
Saturday, 17 March 2012 22:41

KANSAS CITY, KS — Taking advantage of an early red card, Sporting Kansas City dominated the New England Revolution in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 19,777 fans at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

The first truly dangerous chance for Sporting came in the eighth minute when Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis came about 25 yards out from his net to play a ball and appeared to foul C.J. Sapong. Play was allowed to continue and Roger Espinoza put a looping shot off the post.

Two minutes later, Sapong was taken down near the top of the box, but the ensuing free kick was deflected wide for a corner.

Defender Stephen McCarthy was sent off in the 14th minute. McCarthy was cited for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity as the last man back when Sapong was on a breakaway. McCarthy was pulling on Sapong's shirt for about 10 yards before referee Silviu Petrescu whistled the foul and reached directly for the red card.

The dam was broken in the 28th minute. Seth Sinovic sent a cross into the box that was headed away by Shalrie Joseph. The ball came down to Kei Kamara in the penalty area and he tried putting the ball on target. In the middle of a pile in front of the goal, midfielder Graham Zusi got a foot on it and put it in the net for his first goal of the season..

Kamara doubled the Sporting's lead in the 39th minute. Sinovic again put a cross in front that was deflected out to Kamara. His initial shot was saved by Reis, but Kamara was able to put in the rebound. The goal was Kamara's first of the 2012 season.

Two minutes after the restart, Sapong increased the lead to 3-0. Zusi fed a ball forward for Sinovic in the penalty area. Sinovic found Sapong, who slotted the ball in past Reis. The 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year how has two goals on the young season.

How dominant was Sporting KC in this match? While taking into account they spent 75 minutes a man up, their possession percentage went up in the second half, from 62.4 percent to 68.3 percent. Their passing accuracy also increased from the first to second half, 84.7 percent to 86.9 percent. They also completed almost twice as many total passes as New England, an almost Barcelona-like 647 passes to 328 for the visitors.

With the win, Sporting KC tops the Eastern Conference with six points and will host FC Dallas on Sunday, March 25th at 6 p.m. CT. New England will return home to face the Portland Timbers on Saturday, March 24th at 4 p.m. ET.

Caleb Porter Relying on Freddy Adu: Hoping He Can Lead U.S. to Olympics
MLS News
Friday, 16 March 2012 17:36

It can be easy to forget that Freddy Adu is still just 22 years old. The American soccer prodigy broke through to professional soccer at 14 with D.C. United and then fluttered around Major League Soccer before re-emerging as the supreme American talent at the Under-20 World Cup in 2007.

After the 2007 Under-20 World Cup, Adu transferred from Real Salt Lake to Portuguese giants Benfica. And that's where his career stalled for a bit.

Now, after four separate loan spells, Adu returned to MLS to play for the Philadelphia Union last season. Adu's return was a big deal for MLS and the Union, the league got one of its premier faces and names back and the Union got a supremely talented player to lead its midfield.

But now he's being asked to be something he hasn't been for all those years as a prodigy: a leader.

Adu is not only being asked to be a leader of a young Union side, but he's also being asked to be the leader of an even younger Under-23 side trying to qualify for this summer's Olympics in London.

Adu is the only player returning from the 2008 Olympics for the 2012 Olympics. It's no surprise coach Caleb Porter didn't select anyone else from the 2008 side as much of that team has moved on and is no longer eligible.

But it's still scary to think that Adu is the most capped and most experienced player on the roster, because Adu isn't the perfect role model of a player. It's not his attitude or skill or off-the-field antics that are the problem. It's the way he carries himself on the field.

That could spell trouble for Porter as he tries to build an attacking, free-flowing side like the ones he's cultivated at Akron over the past few years.

There is no doubting Adu can play at this stage, he has done it before. There is no doubting he fits into Porter's style of play. The question is can he lead this side?

Can he put the team on his back and show everyone how they're supposed to play? Can he show the more inexperienced players (read: everyone on the team) how to compete on the top level and how to play both ways?

Those are big questions for a 22-year-old player, but there ones we shouldn't be asking of Adu in the first place. This is a player who should have made giant leaps and been playing in Europe regularly by now. He's not.

He's home in MLS playing for a coach who understands him. That's kind of scary when thinking he will be the focal point of this Olympic qualifying team's midfield and attack.

Adu needs to be the leader. He needs to show the rest of this team what it means to be a U.S. International. He needs to step up.

It's a good sign that he's come out and embraced the role already. Maybe this is the point where he matures and becomes the player scouts thought he would be.

“I’ve always been one of the youngest guys on the team. But now I’m one of the older guys, one of the more experienced guys, and I have to be more of a leader. The guys are looking up to me, asking me questions and looking at me to step up," Adu told U.S. Soccer.

Adu has a lot of pressure on him with this side. The U.S. is expected to get out of its group with El Salvador, Cuba and Canada and then advance to the CONCACAF finals, where both teams make it to the Olympics no matter the who wins the tournament.

Adu will need to lead Porter's team on the field; there isn't another player with the experience and the skill set Adu has on the roster.

To play Porter's preferred 4-3-3, Adu will need to work hard, either in the middle of the field or on the wings, to track runners and press defenders when the U.S. doesn't have the ball.

That is something he isn't prone to doing: to set the tempo and show the rest of the team what's expected. This is Adu's chance to shine on the world stage again and prove he belongs with the best of American talents.

It will be interesting to see how he fares and where he goes from here.

DC United: Stadium Speculation Continues to Swirl Around Buzzard Point
MLS News
Thursday, 15 March 2012 20:22

DC United stadium plans have seen many variations over the last few years. There have been so many rumors regarding location and timing that DC United fans do not know what to believe anymore.

Further fueling speculation are the articles in the Washington Post this week concerning potential development plans for Buzzard Point near the Washington Nationals' ballpark. The article references a 20-page concept document containing plans for the stadium.

Is the Buzzard Point plan a legitimate option or another path to nowhere?

According to the article, the plans were dated July 2010 which could lead fans to believe this is a repeat of previous proposals, but United owner Will Chang did confirm Buzzard Point is a target area for a stadium last weekend.

As with any stadium plans, there are several roadblocks to overcome before the dream becomes reality. With Buzzard Point, the main sticking point appears to be the current owners of some of the targeted land in the area. The other roadblock is the all-too-common question of how to finance the stadium.

The Sporting News also reported this week on a new lease agreement between RFK Stadium and DC United keeping the team there through the 2013 season. If United want to get into a new home at the end of this lease, they will have to get things sorted out quickly to break ground in time to be ready for 2014.

It is a surprise that DC United does not yet have a soccer specific stadium. As the original premier team of MLS, DC United and their fans are deserving of a venue which demonstrates their status as the most decorated team in MLS history.  The extra revenue generated from controlling their own stadium could help propel them back among the league's elite where they belong. Here is hoping Buzzard Point or another viable stadium option comes to fruition soon.
