Youth Academy Update As Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy continued their long break ahead of their June 17 match with the Portland Timbers, the youth academies were doing the business, wrapping up the regular season with SoCal Division crowns in U.S. Soccer Development Academy play. The Under-16s head into the U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoffs on an 18-game unbeaten streak after shutting out Nomads SC 2-0. Chris Constantini opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest while Steve Martinez doubled the Young G's advantage in the 61st minute of play. As for the Under-18s, they crushed Nomads to the tune of 5-0. Rolando Munoz opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Justin Dhillon added a brace in the 45th and 76th minutes. Other goalscorers for the U-18s include Jose Rivera and Pedro Lugo. The Under-12s side also has some playoff action to attend to. On June 18, they will compete in the US Youth Far West Regionals in Phoenix, Ariz. The winner of that tournament will advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships, scheduled for July 25-29 in Rock Hill, S.C. Ease up on Leonardo As for Arena, he breathed a sigh of relief when he found out that the injury to defender Leonardo was really just a slight knock and nothing worse. “He was assessed as having a torn ACL at the scene,” Arena told Luis Bueno of MLSSoccer.com. "“I’m still waiting to make sure that [his knee is] OK. “The guy has worked so hard. It’s unbelievable how hard he’s worked. He scores a goal in this game and comes off a few minutes later. We’re happy it appears to be nothing serious. Hopefully, he’ll be ready to go next week.” Can the Reserves break through? The LA Galaxy Reserves have been faring better than the first team after they defeated the Portland Timbers last Saturday, 2-1. A number of those players could be making the first team when they take on Portland's first XI on June 17. “Every time you go out there and get a ‘W’ it’s something to build off of,” right back Bryan Jordan told LAGalaxy.com's Larry Morgan. “I think the whole team recognizes it. “Any time you’re going through a difficult stretch, winning games is important. The fact we were up 2-0 and we were able to hold on to a lead, we’ve had cases this year where we’ve been up in first-team games and have given up leads, I think it gives us confidence.” Currently, the Galaxy Reserves own a three-game unbeaten streak. Reserve team manager Curt Onalfo is aware of the importance of these contests. “It keeps these guys in the mix,” Onalfo told Morgan. “It keeps them pushing them for first-team spots and it helps bring back players from injury. "It serves a lot of purposes, it’s definitely a platform for players to perform and improve their standing.” What, us worry?
The long break for the Los Angeles Galaxy has been a most welcome one, of all things. Sporting a 3-8-2 record, the Galaxy have had a lot of time to think about what went wrong. Defender A.J. DeLaGarza is fully aware that the detractors have been out in full force. “Some people, I’m not going to say who, they don’t think we try,” DeLaGarza told LAGalaxy.com's Larry Morgan. “But I can tell you there’s not a single player on this team, in this league or a professional athlete, period, who wants to lose. “We practice every day to win games, and sometimes it doesn’t happen. You’ve just got to find a way past that.” One of the bright spots for the team is that goalkeeper Josh Saunders could be available for the June 17 match. Saunders is wrapping up his MLS Substance Abuse and Behavior Health program time. (Courtesy Sporting News) “We have a crazy stretch of games coming up,” Saunders told the press. “We need to work on the little things, then it’s all going to show on the field." CONCACAF Champions League business This past week, the draw for the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League Group Stage took place. Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy were drawn into Group 5, which also features Isidro Metapan of El Salvador and the third-place team from the Caribbean Football Connection. Among the possible clubs from that group: USL Pro side Antigua Barracuda FC of Antigua and Barbuda, Caledonia AIA and W Connection of Trinidad and Tobago and the Puerto Rico Islanders of the NASL. “We are looking forward to returning to play in the CONCACAF Champions League,” Arena said, per the team's official website. “We know that we will have to play four difficult games against Metapan and our Caribbean opponents but we look forward to the challenge.” The Los Angeles Galaxy qualified for this year's Champions League by winning the 2011 MLS Supporters Shield and 2011 MLS Cup. Isidro Metapan qualified for this year's edition by winning the 2011 Apertura. Caledonia and W Connection finished in the top two of the 2011-12 TT Pro League, while Puerto Rico qualified as the defending CFU Club Championship champion. D.C. United lost 2-1 to the Philadelphia Union Tuesday night in a physical U.S. Open Cup round of 16 matchup in front of 3,276 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds. Antoine Hoppenot’s goal a minute and a half into the first overtime, past the outstretched leg of United goalie Bill Hamid, who had come out to challenge the rookie substitute, put the Union up to stay. Former United phenom Freddy Adu's left-footed pass set up Hoppenot’s game-winning goal. Hoppenot almost scored in injury time but Hamid dove to his right to stop the potential game-winner, and the match went into overtime. United controlled the action for most of the game but was unable to finish its chances, with Union goaltender Zac MacMath making several key saves. It was a hard-fought, scrappy battle that the referees at times let get out of hand. In the 112th minute of action, United defender Brandon McDonald and Union defender Carlos Valdes were ejected with red cards because of their roles in a scuffle in front of the Union goal. Several times apparent penalties did not get called. In the 72nd minute, Valdes blatantly elbowed United forward Maicon Santos but no whistle was made. The match was scoreless during the first 45 minutes until each side found the back of the net in injury time. Union midfielder Brian Carroll opened the scoring with a shot from just outside the penalty box, that bounced off of United defender Emiliano Dudar and past Hamid into the left side of the net. On the next sequence, United midfielder Andy Najar lofted a beautiful ball from the right side of the field across to midfielder Nick DeLeon, stationed in front of the left side of the goal. DeLeon headed the ball to forward Josh Wolff, in front of the right side of the goal, and Wolff headed it into the corner of the net, sending United fan club Barra Brava into a frenzy. It was a homecoming for Adu, the former child star who debuted at age 14 for D.C. United and whose family moved from Ghana to Rockville when he was eight. Adu has not become the superstar many had expected him to be, but he has been a solid player for several clubs in MLS and overseas. The Union relied on Adu to take most of their corner kicks, although it may be as much because of his lack of height as his skill with set balls. The Union will host the Harrisburg City Islanders in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup June 26. Open Cup matches do not count in the MLS standings. United (8-4-3) remains at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference Standings, while the Union sits two spots from the cellar at 2-7-2. Read more MLS news on BleacherReport.com Source: Click Here

Sporting Kansas City used a lock-down defense and a goal from Rapids-killer Teal Bunbury to defeat Colorado 2-0 in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup in front of 14,868 fans at Livestrong Sporting Park. Just over two weeks ago, Colorado fought back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to earn a draw with Kansas City at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. In the locker room after the game, I asked defender Matt Besler what changed between the two matches. He said: "Our attitude. We were at home, we wanted to make sure we drove the game. In Colorado, we sat back too much and let them have the ball and let them dictate the play. We wanted to make sure we pressured higher up the field this game." Sporting KC enjoyed the majority of the possession in the first half, but too many chances were left unfinished. As an example, in the 11th minute, Besler put one of his Rory Delap-like long throw-ins into the penalty area. Defender Chance Myers tried to use his heel to direct it into the net, but it bounced up and over the crossbar. The match was also incredibly physical. Sporting KC and Colorado combined for 32 total fouls and five yellow cards. Sporting KC got credit for the first goal in the 27th minute. Midfielder Graham Zusi put a 40-yard free-kick in the penalty area for Aurelien Collin. Goalkeeper Matt Pickens made a spectacular save on Collin's header, pushing it onto the post. Unfortunately for Pickens, it then came back and bounced off of his gloves and into the back of the net. Originally given to Collin, the goal was changed to an own-goal. Colorado seemed to wake up after the goal was scored. Two minutes later, forward Wells Thompson took a shot from approximately 40 yards out, but goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen punched the ball clear, his first save of the night. The Rapids seemed to carry this renewed energy into the second half. Seven minutes after the restart, midfielder Martin Rivero brought the ball up the right sideline and put a cross into the 18-yard box. There it found Jamie Castrillon, who one-timed the ball off of the post. The ball then bounced out to Edu's feet, but Collin broke up the play and cleared the ball from danger. In the 61st minute, Bunbury made a nice play to keep the ball in play along the left sideline. He then took the ball into the penalty area and took a shot, but put the ball over the bar. The 69th minute featured some end-to-end action. Sporting KC's Graham Zusi had a close-in shot deflected that Colorado turned into a quick counter-attack which Collin haulted with a well-timed tackle near the top of the 18-yard box. In the 79th minute, Bunbury notched his sixth goal in eight matches against Colorado. Second half substitute Soony Saad crossed the ball in from the right. Intended for C.J. Sapong, Kosuke Kimura got to it first and headed it straight up in the air. Sapong got the better of the second duel and headed the ball to Bunbury, who volleyed home from seven yards out. In the postgame press conference, Bunbury was asked if he was in a groove. He said: "I feel like I'm in that groove. I feel like a lot of strikers, you know you get in streaks and things like that, but the ultimate goal for me is to try to work hard on the field. The goal is, obviously, I want to score every game, but the things off the ball as well, you know, working hard defensively, getting in good positions, making good runs. Things like that really help out the rest of the team." The last ten minutes of the game produced a lot of physical play in the midfield, but no scoring chances for either team. Sporting KC will now have 11 days until their next match when they host Toronto FC on June 16th at 7:30 p.m. CDT. That match starts a stretch of five matches in 13 days. The next Open Cup match for Sporting KC will be June 26th, also at 7:30 p.m. CDT, when they host the Dayton Dutch Lions of USL PRO. Read more MLS news on BleacherReport.com Source: Click Here

Trouble for Magee and Stephens The bad news continues for Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy. Midfielders Mike Magee and Michael Stephens were fined and suspended by the MLS Disciplinary Committee this past week. Both Magee and Stephens were shown yellow cards for their incidents. But the Disciplinary Committee ruled that Stephens endangered the safety of his opponent on his 46th-minute foul on Adam Moffat. Magee, on the other hand, was deemed to have committed aggravated dissent against referee Silviu Petrescu, including throwing a ball in his direction in the second minute of second half stoppage time. As a result, Los Angeles will now be without both Magee and Stephens, as well as fellow midfielder Hector Jimenez, for the game against Portland on June 17. Jimenez was given a two-game suspension for his foul on San Jose’s Steven Beitashour in LA’s 3-2 loss to the Earthquakes on May 23. Reserves break through in Portland While it has been difficult for the first team to get a positive result at Jeld-Wen Field, it has not been the case for the Los Angeles Galaxy reserves, who powered their way to a 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers reserves on Saturday. Kyle Nakazawa opened the scoring in the third minute thanks to a delivery from Leonardo, who had to be stretchered off due to injury in the 10th minute of play. Chad Barrett made it 2-0 Galaxy in the 30th minute. Eric Alexander scored for Portland in the 67th minute of play off a penalty conversion. With the victory, Los Angeles are now on a three-game unbeaten streak in MLS Reserve League play. Los Angeles's next Reserve League match is on June 12 against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. In the Red Bulls 1-1 draw with Chivas USA, it was Kenny Cooper who scored the equalizer. In the team’s first U.S. Open Cup game against the Charleston Battery, he scored the first goal of the game—one that would eventually be the game-winner. The tally against the Goats was his 11th of the season, and ties him with San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski for the league lead. He’s also tied with Wondolowski for the league lead with four game-winning goals. The two share the same amount of goals, but what is different is that only one is currently in camp for the United States Men’s National Team in preparation for its upcoming friendlies ahead of World Cup Qualifying. Chris Wondolowski and former MLS forward Herculez Gomez were both called into camp, and deservedly so—they’ve been on incredible scoring streaks. It is well-known that players getting consistent minutes for their clubs and playing in good form are favored for spots with the national team. So with Cooper playing his best soccer in years, the time has come to once again ask: When will Kenny Cooper get called up? Cooper has been a scoring machine in his time with MLS, and is playing his best soccer since 2008 when he scored 18 goals in 30 games (19 goals in all competitions) for FC Dallas. The Red Bulls acquired him in the offseason for a 2013 first-round draft pick and allocation money, which it seemed like a lot to give up for a guy who plays a position the team was pretty deep at. But Cooper quickly rose to the cream of the crop and has been much needed since Luke Rodgers was denied a visa, Juan Agudelo was traded, Corey Hertzog was loaned out and Thierry Henry missed several matches due to injury. Cooper has consistently delivered for the Red Bulls this season. He is on his second four-game scoring streak of the season, and he has been able to make an impact on the game from both off the bench—where he was the first two games of the season—and starting. As the United States struggled to finish against Brazil Wednesday despite plenty of chances, the team is still looking for answers on the offensive side of the ball. The 27-year-old Cooper—once a Manchester United prospect and reserve squad member—has had fans clamoring for the team to give him a shot since the beginning of his career. And in those chances, he’s risen to the challenge. He’s made 10 appearances for the USMNT, and scored four goals. In his first World Cup Qualifying start for the Yanks in 2008, he scored. He also scored twice in the 2009 Gold Cup. The consistent snubs are puzzling, but Cooper just keeps playing and scoring. “I’ve had the honor to represent my country and it has been some of the highlights of my career, there have been some amazing moments and I’m hungry for more of those opportunities,” he said in an interview with the press after practice in late May. Cooper is a big forward who can play with his back to the goal, but is actually a better technical player than his size suggests. As he’s shown in his partnership with Henry this year, he does a good job of playing alongside another forward and sharing the ball, not only scoring for himself, but feeding and creating space for his partner to score as well. He also just has a nose for the goal, putting in some rebounds and so-called “garbage goals” as well. He’s in his prime and getting lots of playing time for his club. He says he has never been contacted by Jurgen Kilinsmann, but the question is: why not? What else does Cooper have to do to earn just an opportunity? The Aftermath of an Open Cup crash Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy have a lot of time to think ahead to their next contest of the season, a June 17 match with the Portland Timbers. The Galaxy exited the U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 loss to the Carolina RailHawks in the third round. "With the way the season has been going, a lot of us haven’t been getting a lot of minutes," Galaxy midfielder Michael Stephens told MLSSoccer.com's Luis Bueno. "We were planning on playing next week, so it’s a big disappointment for us." "It’s a point in the game where we were a little fatigued,” Arena told the press. “We’d used all three of our changes at that point. We had some unfortunate injuries. They were more aggressive obviously in the last 30 minutes." Among the casualties were Hector Jimenez, Chad Barrett and Bryan Gaul, who were subbed out due to injury. "The fact that we had three guys come out with injuries, three guys who had actually been playing games, three guys that would have been in to play 90 minutes was a little bit unfortunate," Stephens added. "I think you saw that a lot of guys ran out of legs down the stretch." Despite Leonardo returning to action, injuries and match fatigue, combined with the choice of fielding an understrength lineup, doomed the Galaxy late. "(It was) remarkable we got 90 minutes out of him,” Arena said of Leonardo. “He’d played 45 minutes in a reserve game previous to this. We didn’t anticipate him playing that long, but once we had those injuries and had to make all those changes, he had to stay in there. He did a good job, but obviously he got tired in the end." Youth Academy Update Meanwhile, with the Los Angeles Galaxy Youth Academy, it has been a more optimistic sort of affairs. The Galaxy Under-16s (16-3-7 overall, 10-1-4 SoCal Division) clinched the SoCal Division title and top seed in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoffs with a 2-2 draw against Arsenal FC this past weekend. The point moved the Galaxy into a tie for first place in the standings, joining Real Salt Lake-Arizona (17-6-4 overall, 11-4-1 SoCal Division) at the top of the table with 34 points. The U-16s clinched the division by way of superior goal differential. The Galaxy Under-18s are touching down on a SoCal Division title of their own. The Galaxy U-18s (19-4-3 overall, 11-3-1 SoCal Division) used a commanding 5-1 victory over Arsenal FC on Saturday to move into first place in the SoCal Division as well as clinch a spot in the U.S Soccer Development Academy playoffs. LA are one point ahead of Chivas USA and can clinch the division this weekend against Nomads SC. Here is the game schedule for this weekend: LA Galaxy U-16 vs. Nomads SC Saturday, June 2 At The Home Depot Center – Field 5 at 12:30 p.m. LA Galaxy U-18 vs. Nomads SC Saturday, June 2 At The Home Depot Center – Field 5 at 10 a.m. Read more MLS news on BleacherReport.com Source: Click Here

Heading to Michigan to face the Michigan Bucks on Tuesday, the Chicago Fire did not expect to lose. But after a 3-2 loss in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, I must say that it could serve as a blessing in disguise. Losing to a team from the Player Development League (PDL) should be a wake-up call for the Fire. In the Fire's defense, they have been undermanned with two of their top players sidelined with injuries: defender Arne Friedrich has been out along with midfielder Chris Rolfe. The biggest problem is the offense which has also struggled especially early in games. With a trip to New England on the horizon and stinging from the loss to the Bucks should have the Fire come out angry and focused. What better way to get a win streak started than against the seventh-place Revolution? To win on Saturday, the Fire must attack early and often while neutralizing Saer Sene. The MLS rookie from France leads the Revolution in goals scored with seven and shots with 29. While Sene has flourished, New England has struggled, having also lost their third-round matchup to the Harrisburg Islanders. The Fire must also avoid falling behind on the scoreboard. This has been what has hampered the Fire so far throughout the season. It happened on Tuesday during the loss to the Bucks with the Fire getting behind 1-0. They must not fall behind in the game in New England. If Rafael Robayo and Sebastian Grazzini can provide some much-needed energy, the Fire will have a shot to get a early lead and perhaps leave Gillette Stadium victorious. The MLS (Major League Soccer) is fast approaching a serious roadblock to growing into a sport with a truly national following. This roadblock is also related to a common criticism that the sport in general is boring. This sentiment is best reflected in television ratings, because if a sport is truly popular, then there would be people watching it on television. The MLS has television deals with NBC and ESPN, so just how bad are the ratings for the "world sport"? Well, for NBC's first broadcast of an MLS game, there were only 82,000 viewers. If the MLS were a sitcom, the show would have been canceled faster than you can say "Viva Laughlin." True, the attendance figures for games on average has increased, but sports leagues don't make a majority of their money from attendance; they get revenue from television deals. Due to the lack of television ratings, it will be hard for a network broadcasting the games to generate ad revenue because of how few people watch. That is a serious problem, because networks like NBC or ESPN will drop coverage due to lackluster ratings. If ESPN no longer broadcasts NHL games, then they can very easily pull MLS. There is also a perception problem with the MLS, because unlike the other sports where there is world-class talent, MLS gets the scraps from Europe. Besides, for those die-hard soccer fans out there, what would you rather watch, a Premier League match or an MLS match? There is a perception that the MLS is essentially a glorified Triple-A minor-league system. Even if there is great home-grown talent, those players will always go to Europe, because that's where the soccer money is. In essence, don't expect Didier Drogba to ever cross the Atlantic. The interest of soccer in the United States is very fickle and inconsistent: Public interest peaks around the World Cup, then dies down after the United States is out of the tournament. Middle America simply doesn't care about a sport that they attribute to children and frozen orange slices after games. In all fairness to the game of soccer, it is a very recent development in the United States and is trying to compete with the NBA playoffs, the MLB regular season, the NFL and college football. There are simply not enough people to watch. If there was such a demand for soccer in the United States, it would be reflected in the viewers for each match, not the number of views a soccer article receives on ESPN.com. On a night when MLS teams were falling left and right, Sporting Kansas City managed to avoid the upset and put away 10-man Orlando City 3-2 in front of 12,217 fans at Livestrong Sporting Park in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Sporting KC were led by a pair of teenagers. 19-year-old goalkeeper Jon Kempin, making the first competitive start of his young career, made six saves, including at least one that would be a candidate for MLS Save of the Week in league play. During the postgame press conference I attended, manager Peter Vermes said: He’s grown a lot and I thought he was very good tonight. He made some really good saves that kept us in the game and also didn’t lose his cool. There are a lot of things we’ve been talking about—managing the game, building out of the back and being confident—and I thought he was pretty good. For his debut, that was a big-time game. In the locker room after the game, I asked Kempin if he'd thought he'd be in a position to make his first start in tonight's game in only his second full year as a pro. He said: It probably wasn't in my mind. You know, when we sat down with Peter, it was patience and we're looking at three to five years for you. So, to get into a game before and to keep improving, get another 90 minutes in a game like that, it's definitely great. Forward Soony Saad, also 19, had two goals in a four-minute span in the second half, including the game winner. Saad was playing in his first competitive match of 2012. Sporting KC played several backups with a few starters mixed in due to the quick turnaround after the 2-1 win over San Jose on Sunday. Konrad Warzycha, another player in his first competitive match for Sporting KC, chased a ball down in the 10th minute to prevent an Orlando scoring chance. Six minutes later, the Sporting KC defense clamped down again. Defender Chance Myers forced Dennis Chin outside on the right. Chin tried to put a cross in for Charlie Campbell, but Warzycha recovered well to intercept. In the 23rd minute, Aurelien Collin was given a yellow card for a tactical foul. During the ensuing free kick, Campbell took a shot on net that was saved by a diving Kempin. The rest of the half was dotted with missed chances on both sides, some due to unlucky shots and others through defensive efforts. Sporting KC opened the scoring deep in first-half stoppage time. Peterson Joseph played a good ball to Nagamura about 30 yards out. Nagamura took the shot from distance and rifled it into the back of the net. It was the kind of goal that would have a chance to win Goal of the Week in league play. After the game, Vermes said: I keep joking with him every day almost about it that he can hit it from far, hit it from far. So, today we're walking out here, I said, "You know, remember, I keep telling you shoot from distance.' Obviously, the game's over and he scored and his comment was, 'I keep telling you I can shoot from distance.' Orlando City equalized 10 minutes after the restart. St. Louis native Erik Ustruck crossed the ball into the box for Kevin Molino, who headed it past Kempin into the net. Two minutes later, Vermes signaled his intention to substitute forward Teal Bunbury in for Saad, wanting to spark some offense after giving up the tying goal. However, before the sub could be made, Joseph picked up an injury and had to come off for Graham Zusi instead. Luck, it seemed, was on Sporting KC's side. In the 65th minute, Saad gave Sporting KC the lead back. Halftime sub C.J. Sapong lofted the ball out to the left side of the penalty area. Nagamura ran on to the ball and cut it back toward the top of the box for Saad. Instead of his powerful shot, Saad placed the ball inside the far post to make the score 2-1. Saad completed the brace just four minutes later. On a corner kick from Zusi, goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo swatted the ball out of the air, where it fell directly to Saad. Shots from distance being, as he put it after the game, his bread and butter, Saad shot the ball through four or five players and past Gallardo for a two-goal lead. Just before Orlando City was allowed to restart play after the goal, midfielder Anthony Pulis was sent off for violent conduct, having elbowed Sporting KC's Lawrence Olum, a former Orlando City player. Despite being down a man, Orlando City still managed to create some chances, even a three-on-one break they failed to capitalize on. They pulled a goal back in the 84th minute on a 15-yard blast from Chin but just couldn't find an equalizer. With the win, Sporting KC moves on to the Round of 16 and will host a fellow MLS club, the Colorado Rapids, on Tuesday, June 5th, at Livestrong Sporting Park. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CDT.
