Recapping the First Week of Major League Soccer
MLS News
Monday, 04 March 2013 11:11

Major League Soccer finally kicked off its 2013 season, after a four-month layoff. The league lost David Beckham to Paris Saint-Germain, but life goes on without him. And his team, the Los Angeles Galaxy, are looking to defend two consecutive MLS Cup titles.

A 19-team league means nine games each match week, with one team getting the weekend off. This weekend saw the New England Revolution have that "honor" as the rest of the league opened their campaigns.

How did they all fare? Let's have a look.

The Houston Dynamo and Los Angeles Galaxy flexed their formidable muscle this past weekend. Both teams proclaimed their rightful dominance of MLS.

But not every star shined bright in the first weekend of league action. Some teams lacked a star to begin with.

MLS Schedule 2013: Best Rivalry Matches to Watch out for This Season
MLS News
Saturday, 02 March 2013 23:28

The Major League Soccer competition has kicked off for another season with what is set to be another thrilling year of domestic action.

There will no doubt be a plethora of great matches and goals for the season, as well as moments that leave us amazed at what we just saw, but it's the rivalries that will make another great year of domestic action on the American and Canadian front.

Rivalries are starting to grow strong in the MLS now, and 2013 looks like it will be another year of full-on rivalry matches that will leave us wanting more.

Read on to see the best rivalry matches out to watch out for this year.

California Clasico

Full list of fixtures via MLS Soccer.com

The rivalry between Northern and Southern California makes for a fantastic rivalry in sport, and the San Jose vs. L.A.Galaxy one in the MLS is no different.

Galaxy have had the star players and the recognition that San Jose have not had throughout the years, and the pure fact that Landon Donovan will once again be lining up for the Galaxy makes this a must-watch fixture throughout the 2013 season. Donovan led the Earthquakes to two MLS championships and the Galaxy to two MLS cups—making for pretty compelling viewing indeed.

These two clubs really don't like each other that much.

El Capitan

Sunday, March 17 – FC Dallas vs. Houston Dynamo, 1 p.m. ET

The Houston vs. Dallas rivalry in sport has transcended a number of codes and teams throughout the years, and it's done the same for these two teams.

Houston had the upper hand in this derby early, but Dallas have started to really step up their game in the past few years and have made this a much closer match than before.

This one will come in the middle of rivalry week as well—where the entire round is dedicated to league rivalries—and should make for a great match.

Cascadia Cup

Full list of fixtures via MLS Soccer.com

Simply put, there is no greater rivalry in the MLS than that of the Cascadia Cup, with the three teams involved—Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC—all genuinely not liking the other, with that showing on the field.

The fans from each of these three teams travel really well, and whilst it might only be an official rivalry since 2011 onwards, the reality is that this one has been brewing for several years and has been definitely in existence since around the 2004 mark.

A plethora of fixtures throughout the season should see plenty of opportunities for this rivalry to be taken in and appreciated right around the league.

MLS Saturday Wrap
MLS News
Saturday, 02 March 2013 23:02

Saturday's MLS action was the earliest start to an MLS season in league history. For some teams it couldn't come soon enough, while others still appear to be in preseason form.

Now in its 18th season—one more than the original NASL (1968-84)—MLS kicked off with a slate of games highlighted by a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference Final.

The Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City each re-established the dominant form reminiscent of the 2012 season. FC Dallas and the Vancouver Whitecaps also satisfied their home crowds, starting the 2013 season with less-than-stellar victories.

Here's a detailed look at all of Saturday's action.

MLS Predictions 2013: Projecting Top Cup Contenders
MLS News
Friday, 01 March 2013 10:00

The 2013 Major League Soccer season will get underway this weekend, which makes it an ideal time to lay out who will contend for the championship cup this year.

It will be an unprecedentedly long season for America's biggest league with 34 games on the schedule. There is certainly growing respect for the MLS, which is in its 18th year and is attempting to establish itself amongst the world's best (h/t Yahoo!).

The sport's exposure in the U.S. was enhanced by the presence of British star David Beckham, who recently returned to Europe. Beckham's former MLS squad, the Los Angeles Galaxy, is the two-time reigning MLS Cup champions.

While LA should be considered a favorite to three-peat despite the departure of Beckham, there are several other clubs that stand out as contenders and are worth analyzing.

San Jose Earthquakes

As reported by Elliott Almond of the San Jose Mercury News, superstar striker Chris Wondolowski just inked a four-year contract extension. The three-time reigning scoring champion and 2012's MLS Most Valuable Player has committed to the long haul with the Quakes, who are also in the process of building a new stadium for 2014.

Wondolowski intimated that he loved the direction the San Jose organization was going in, and it is easy to see why that is so.

The red-hot Galaxy were not going to be denied in winning their second consecutive cup last season, and they steamrolled the Quakes in the opening round of the playoffs 3-1 after losing the opening match 1-0.

For the Quakes, there is definitely a vengeance factor after that disappointment, especially after finishing atop the league table.

The addition of the versatile Mike Fucito will only help the league's most dominant attack continue to have a commanding possession advantage. With the rest of the core relatively intact, this may be the year that coach Frank Yallop's squad finally reaches the pinnacle of American soccer.

Houston Dynamo

This scrappy bunch ousted Eastern Conference leader Sporting Kansas City in the second round of the postseason, spurred by the momentum gained from the knockout-round triumph over Chicago.

That wave wound up sparking a run all the way to the championship for the second consecutive year, where Houston, of course. fell to the Galaxy.

But as long as they make the tournament again in 2013, there should be no counting out the Dynamo. Coach Dominic Kinnear had a lot of moving pieces to juggle last season (h/t New York Times) but managed to morph his club into instant cup contenders.

Dynamic Honduran winger Boniek Garcia arrived during the transfer window this past June and made an instant impact, being voted the MLS Latino Player of the Year despite his abbreviated season.

Kinnear seems to have the right touch in gauging the pulse of his team, and he tends to pull out close matches. Of the teams in the top-eight in the previous regular season, the Dynamo's plus-five goal differential was the only one not in double digits.

Seattle Sounders

Austrian goalkeeper Michael Gspurning made quite an impression in his maiden MLS campaign. All he did was lead the league in goals against average with a staggering 0.70. He also had nine clean sheets to show for his remarkable efforts.

That type of performance allowed the Sounders to boast the second-best goal differential, but Gspurning was blitzed in the playoffs by the Galaxy attack. That resulted in a costly 3-0 loss in the first matchup that was too much for Seattle to overcome in the final fixture.

GM Adrian Hanauer has been active in the offseason to address the defense in front of Gspurning by signing 34-year-old defensive midfielder Shalrie Joseph and defender Djimi Traore.

The club's all-time leading scorer, Freddy Montero, is now gone, and Hanauer has made strides in that area, too. As BBC's Oluwashina Okeleji reported on Thursday, Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins is set to sign a contract with Seattle on Saturday.

With those transactions, the Sounders figure to be a cup contender yet again thanks to their front office's constant quest for improvement.

Chicago Fire

There simply has to be a feeling of unfinished business for Chicago, whose season ended in the knockout round at the hands of the Dynamo.

It was a painful experience, but one that should fuel the Fire and ultimately provide long-term benefits. Newly acquired veteran Joel Lindpere should provide a spark on the attack, and the versatility of Jeff Larentowicz also gives the midfield a significant upgrade.

2012 was easily the best campaign the Fire have had in quite some time, as they finished with 17 wins—the most in 12 years.

Also, Chicago's attack figures to be enhanced by a lineup featuring last year's leading scorer Chris Wolfe and striker Sherjill MacDonald.

The 28-year-old MacDonald recently articulated his excitement about how things are coming together in the preseason between him and Wolfe on the club's official website, "I feel great already...In the first few training sessions, I feel with Rolfie we’ve already had some direct connections. I feel very good, I’m excited to play with him again and of course it’s easier this year with the preparation."

MacDonald didn't have the benefit of working with Wolfe, as he had to adjust on the fly after coming to Chicago during last summer's transfer window from K.F.C. Germinal Beerschot of the Belgian Pro League.

That added time to develop chemistry bodes well for the Fire to advance further in the postseason and gives them an outside shot at the MLS Cup in 2013.

Ranking the 2013 MLS Designated Players
MLS News
Friday, 01 March 2013 06:25

MLS’ designated player rule, also known as the Beckham Rule, was created as a way for Major League Soccer teams to sign high-profile players, increase attention for the league and excite the league’s fan base.

Since then it has become increasingly used by teams to pay transfer fees to bring in relatively unknown players who address a particular need for a team.

There is no doubt the rule has been a success in the five years it has been in place, with David Beckham’s tenure in the league helping to raise the profile of MLS abroad.

With the 2013 season about to kick off, here is how the league’s current DPs rank. The rankings are based solely on their performances in Major League Soccer.

Breaking Down Portland Timbers' New 2013 Kits
MLS News
Thursday, 28 February 2013 20:52

As part of a massive launch of new kits across Major League Soccer, the Portland Timbers and Adidas announced the team's new primary and secondary kits for the 2013 season on Thursday. The team announced the changes at an art gallery event, where coaches and players addressed the many fans in attendance.

For those who were unable to make the trip to Oregon, the Timbers also took to their Twitter feed to give fans a glimpse of the new digs. Here is a look at Mikael Silvestre modeling the team's new primary look (via the Timbers' Twitter feed):

As has been the case in the past, both Timbers jerseys are almost perfect matches for one another, save for the color. The primary kit is the club's trademark "Ponderosa" green, with white chevron stripes adorning the sides and expanding over the sleeves.

In a breakdown of the jersey on the Timbers' official website, it also notes the addition of a rising sun at the neckline and the phrase "Stand Together" etched on the inner-neck portion. The "Stand Together" phrase is meant to honor the club's supporters and their work in the Portland community.

At first glance, the secondary kit is a carbon copy of the primary only in a rose red color. There are, however, subtle differences, like the thorn sleeve design and etchings of "We Are the Rose City" and "You Cannot Stop Us" on the back neckline and inner-neck portion, respectively.

Adidas has made an emphasis on keeping true to each MLS city with their design of the kits, and Portland is no exception. Both Portland's city flag and the phrase "Soccer City, USA" are embossed on the jock tag of the primary kit as well, which is meant as a nod to the rich soccer history prevalent at every Timbers match.

Overall, Adidas did yet another wonderful job. The designers have both put their own touches on the new kits while sticking to an understated script that avoids any gaudy changes. The city of Portland will be proud to wear these kits in the upcoming season.

Primary Score: 9.5/10

Secondary Score: 9/10
