Analyzing the USMNT's Roster Moves Before the 2013 Gold Cup Quarterfinals
MLS News
Thursday, 18 July 2013 11:36

As the U.S. men's national team moves on to the quarterfinals to play El Salvador, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has decided to make several roster changes that seem to create a few new position battles and important decisions for him to make before Sunday's game.

The four players that were dropped from the roster are as follows: Herculez Gomez, Oguchi Onyewu, Jack McInerney and Corey Ashe. The four players added are: Omar Gonzalez, Matt Besler, Alan Gordon and Eddie Johnson.

The additions are the main source of intrigue in this transaction due to the fact that three of the four players (Gonzalez, Besler and Johnson) are regarded as "A" team players. Gonzalez and Besler are considered to be the future of the center back position for the U.S. national team, which causes some pondering to be done about the center backs already on the roster for this tournament.

Michael Orozco Fiscal and Clarence Goodson were very efficient and consistent in group play, especially in a difficult match against Costa Rica on Tuesday. The question becomes whether Klinsmann will simply drop them in favor of his preferred pair of center backs, Besler and Gonzalez. These two additions have the potential to rock a boat that has seen nothing but smooth sailing so far in this tournament.

The chemistry developed between Orozco Fiscal and Goodson has been a pleasant sight so far, not to mention their aerial ability, which only Gonzalez can really match, as Besler has not been as proficient as these three players in the air.

Besler's ability shines technically, position-wise, and through his passing, in particular, his long range passing. His rapport with Gonzalez has also been significantly improved over the World Cup qualifying games to support the idea that these two are the future of the position for this team. Besler's performances have been consistently steady to the point where he should be viewed as the first center back penciled in to the U.S. lineup for any important competition from here on out.

Gonzalez still has some work to do on the mental side of the game. His physical tools and potential are unparalleled in the pool of U.S. defenders, but he does have the occasional hiccup in games that can either lead to a goal for the opposing team or at the very least, a dangerous chance on net. If he can shore up this aspect of his game, he has all the characteristics of a very good center back, especially with his aerial prowess on set pieces and clearing balls out of the air in the defensive end.

Klinsmann may use his center back pairing from the previous game in this next contest against a relatively weaker opponent in El Salvador, or he may use it to give his two new defenders a chance to get their feet wet and ready for a potential semifinal match. As well as Orozco Fiscal and Goodson have played, I would probably lean towards Gonzalez and Besler getting the start.

The other two new additions, Gordon and Johnson, could make an impact for this team as well, with Johnson having a much more extensive resume than Gordon. Johnson has featured frequently with the first team for the United States recently, mainly in qualifying games for the World Cup. He has the ability to play as a winger on either side, as well as up top as a forward. His versatility and recent form might open the door for him to take the left-sided midfield spot over Jose Francisco Torres, Brek Shea or Alejandro Bedoya.

Bedoya played admirably in the last game as the starting right midfielder, and Shea came on as a substitute as a left midfielder to score a very composed, game-winning goal on a beautiful pass from Landon Donovan. Shea may be used in the same role going forward as a change-of-pace player versus tiring defenders.

Bedoya's role is a bit more uncertain, but he also brings the versatility to play on either side, so while he may ultimately lose out to Johnson or Torres on the left, he could be used in the same role as Shea was last game on the other side to spell Joe Corona. However, there is a chance he has earned himself another start on the right, and Corona may be the one to spell him late in the game, as he did against Costa Rica.

With Johnson's recent good form for this team, I would think he gets some minutes during this next game, possibly a start on the left side. Torres has also played very well in recent games, but as we saw in choosing the lineup for the Costa Rica game, Klinsmann is not afraid to make instinctual decisions and wholesale changes to his attack. A sleeper idea is to run Johnson up top as a forward, but that is more of a long shot at this point.

Gordon's inclusion to the team is intriguing due to the fact that he has only made one appearance with the U.S. national team so far. However, his appearance was a crucial one as he came on as a late substitute against Antigua and Barbuda. He provided the assist on the game-winning goal to, ironically, Eddie Johnson.

In this season's MLS campaign with the San Jose Earthquakes, Gordon has been a slight disappointment compared to last season. He only has three goals and two assists in 13 games compared to 13 goals and seven assists in 23 games last year. He was also suspended for three games this season for a rather ugly incident that occurred on the pitch.

Gordon will not likely have much of an impact on the remaining games for the United States except for a possible late-game substitution if they are behind and desire more attacking firepower.

The one disappointing subtraction from the team is young Jack McInerney from the Philadelphia Union. The 20-year-old has had an excellent season for the Union so far by scoring 10 goals in 14 games. His production and youthful talent made him an easy selection to the squad, but in the eyes of Klinsmann he is not ready to play major minutes for his national team. It would have been nice to get some sort of observation and evaluation of his readiness with some guest appearances, but it was not to be.

With more work in the future, McInerney will again make a case to join this team, and hopefully then, Klinsmann will be ready to give him a chance. His experience and results with the younger U.S. teams seem to be an indicator that he will make the jump to the next level sooner rather than later. Perhaps in less than a year, he may have some kind of a role on this U.S. team.

Taking all of this into account, Klinsmann does have some tough decision to make following these changes. Chemistry, confidence and a historic winning streak are all at stake right now, and no one knows that more than Klinsmann.

Real Salt Lake, L.A. Galaxy on Upset Alert in MLS This Weekend
MLS News
Thursday, 18 July 2013 07:00

Hope you all have been enjoying the Gold Cup so far. Personally, I was kind of rooting for Martinique to qualify for the knockout stage, if only because no one really expected them to get that far. If not for a 4-0 win for Cuba over a 10-man Belize, they would have made it.

The matchups I've selected for this weekend have been affected by the Gold Cup in one way or another, on both sides in one case.

Let's get to it, shall we?

Upset Alert No. 1: Real Salt Lake vs. Sporting Kansas City

Real Salt Lake is on top of the table when it comes to the Supporters Shield race, but how long that lasts is now under threat.

With Nick Rimando and Kyle Beckerman away with the U.S. national team, their depth was already a little thinner than they'd like. Last weekend, however, it got a little worse. Backup goalkeeper Josh Saunders tore his ACL and will be out indefinitely, while defender Carlos Salcedo will miss Saturday's match after having his gall bladder removed Sunday.

RSL did make a move to shore up their defense by acquiring Brandon McDonald from DC United for a couple of draft picks.

Sporting Kansas City, on the other hand, was missing Peterson Joseph and Mechack Jerome, playing for Haiti in the Gold Cup. With Haiti's elimination, both have returned to Kansas City and will be available for selection on Saturday.

However, 2012 MLS Defender of the Year Matt Besler was called up to the U.S. national team for the knockout stage of the Gold Cup. I'm sure manager Peter Vermes is thankful Jurgen Klinsmann did not also call up midfielder Graham Zusi.

With Sporting KC coming off of one of their best games of the season last weekend, it will be interesting to see if RSL can handle it and defend their home turf.

Upset Alert No. 2: Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

Last Sunday, the Galaxy had their two-match win streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to Portland. I'm sure Bruce Arena would have liked to have had Landon Donovan available for selection, but Donovan is trying to complete his comeback with the U.S. national team.

The Galaxy back line took a hit on Wednesday when Klinsmann called up defender Omar Gonzalez for the Gold Cup knockout stage. I'm sure Arena would rather have Gonzalez available, considering the club's consistently inconsistent form this season.

Vancouver, however, was only missing backup goalkeeper Simon Thomas, but I would guess he was at minimum third on the team's depth chart, behind Joe Cannon and Brad Knighton.

The Whitecaps are on a six-match unbeaten streak (5-0-1) and currently sit in third place in the Western Conference, one point behind Cascadia rival Portland.

The key for me will be how the Galaxy react to the loss of Gonzalez and the continuing absence of Donovan while also taking on one of the hotter teams in MLS.

MLS Week 21: Complete Schedule and 5 Things to Watch for This Weekend
MLS News
Thursday, 18 July 2013 06:49

Righting the ship will be the narrative surrounding MLS Week 21. A pair of Western Conference powers can no longer afford to sink with it.

The mid-week action picked up late Wednesday night.

The Colorado Rapids rallied back from an early 1-0 deficit to capture a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution. Down a man, Chivas USA captured a one-goal victory of their own. Erick Torres—with an assist by a Toronto FC deflection—netted a game-winner in his MLS debut to snap Chivas' 14-game winless streak.

Eight matches will follow this weekend.

But with so much action on tap, what warrants your attention in Week 21?

Read on to find out.

Who Should Start for the USMNT Against Costa Rica in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup?
MLS News
Tuesday, 16 July 2013 16:15

With a difficult grudge match looming against Costa Rica today, Jurgen Klinsmann has some decisions to make in order to maintain the confidence and chemistry shown during this seven-game winning streak.

Some of the positions on the field are not in flux, as we can expect Landon Donovan, Nick Rimando and DaMarcus Beasley to all get the starting nod come game time.

The former two have been consistently good in the group matches and Beasley seems to be the only real lock on a back line that has delivered mixed results against lackluster teams in Guatemala, Belize and Cuba. Beasley's impressive performances in World Cup Qualifying games are further evidence to justify his starting spot as well.

With three spots down, there are eight spots remaining to help bolster the United States' chances of finishing group play undefeated, entering the quarterfinals with an easier opponent, and most surprisingly, improving to a historic team high eight-game winning streak.

The surprising element comes with the idea that this group of players for the United States is generally regarded as their "B" team, with some players like Donovan and Chris Wondolowski gaining consideration for the "A" team.

If today's match results in a victory, the U.S. Men's National team's recent success will be even more impressive given the fact that Costa Rica has six of the 11 starters from the infamous "Snow Game" in which we saw the United States grab a 1-0 victory that was criticized and caused protests from Costa Rican soccer officials; the "Snow Game" was a World Cup Qualifying game, making the result that much more important.

Seeing as this is the last game before the quarterfinals, Klinsmann should look for some continuity in the lineups he will be using from here on out.

Most likely, the lineup we see tonight will be the lineup he sends out in the following game as well, barring an injury or a poor performance from the players under consideration to start.

So who will Klinsmann start against Costa Rica?

Best and Worst from MLS Week 20: Thierry Henry, Portland's Game-Winner and More
MLS News
Monday, 15 July 2013 06:39

After MLS Week 20, never say never again. The Portland Timbers and Peguy Luyindula can attest to that.

Tiki-taka football and long-range blasts propelled Sporting Kansas City to a 3-0 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday. With the win, the team now sits atop the Eastern Conference with 33 points.

The Vancouver Whitecaps followed suit with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire, with Camilo Sanvezzo stealing the show at BC Place. MLS' hottest striker netted a brace and has scored a league-best nine goals since June 1.

But some tough competition kept Sanvezzo and Kansas City from making the list of best and worst from MLS Week 20.

Read on to find out why.

The usual suspects returned to form in MLS Week 19. Well, everyone except Federico Higuain.

The Colorado Rapids followed an impressive 2-0 victory on the Fourth of July with a scoreless draw against DC United. The Montreal Impact also failed to impress on Sunday, earning just a 1-1 draw at home against Chivas USA.

With the draws, neither team made the list of best and worst from MLS Week 19.
