Ultimate Guide to MLS Weekend: Wondolowski 1 Strike Away from Goal Milestone
MLS News
Friday, 15 April 2016 01:44

Major League Soccer prides itself on week-to-week unpredictability and parity from top to bottom, but the one constant that hasn't changed over the last seven seasons is Chris Wondolowski's knack for scoring goals.

The San Jose Earthquakes forward can jump into sole possession of fourth place on the MLS all-time scoring chart with a tally on Saturday in Portland. Wondolowski moved level with Ante Razov on 114 goals with his strike in San Jose's 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old striker usually doesn't produce tallies that end up on the weekly highlight reel, but he does find the back of the net on a consistent basis like no other player has been able to.

Starting with his 18 goals in 2010, Wondolowski has reached the double-digit goal mark in six consecutive years. If his current pace keeps up, the San Jose forward will extend that streak to seven years before the summer begins.

The veteran forward receives plenty of criticism from the United States men's national team fan base for his lack of production at the international level, but he has never let those performances affect him in MLS.

Some may say if you've seen one Wondo goal, you've seen them all. The United States international is famous for featuring in the poacher role in the final third. Many of Wondolowski's strikes have been produced by smart runs in front of the net and tidy skill on the ball. The current Golden Boot leader has struck from close range on five occasions in 2016.

In addition to being ever-present in the penalty area, Wondolowski has tallied 57 of his 114 strikes on the road and 57 on his home pitch. Those totals make him the sixth-best home scorer and third-best road scorer in league history. He only needs five road strikes to break Landon Donovan's all-time record of 61.

The player who spent the majority of his early career in Houston has a good chance to move ahead of Razov on the all-time scoring chart on Saturday. The forward netted his second goal of the young season against Week 7 opponent Portland on March 13.

If the 33-year-old scores in double figures again in 2016 and produces the same high numbers in 2017, he could break Landon Donovan's mark of 144 goals. While we're still a long way from seeing that happen, it's possible Wondolowski could go down as the league's top scorer when his career ends.

Another major milestone could be recorded in Week 7 if Brian Carroll is named to Philadelphia's starting 11. If the central midfielder steps on the pitch against Seattle on Saturday, he'll become the sixth player in league history to make 350 appearances. Kyle Beckerman is the all-time leader entering Week 7, with 382 games played.

There are plenty of other things worth keeping an eye on in Week ,7 and we'll have a look at them below in our weekend preview.

Week 7 Schedule

LA Galaxy at Houston Dynamo (Friday, 7 p.m. ET, UniMas)

Montreal Impact at Chicago Fire (Saturday, 5 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

Toronto FC at D.C. United (Saturday, 5 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

New York City FC at Columbus Crew (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

New York Red Bulls at Colorado Rapids (Saturday, 9 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

Vancouver Whitecaps at Real Salt Lake (Saturday, 10 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

Philadelphia Union at Seattle Sounders (Saturday, 10 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

San Jose Earthquakes at Portland Timbers (Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

New England Revolution at Orlando City (Sunday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN)

Sporting Kansas City at FC Dallas (Sunday, 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1)

Players to Watch

Sebastian Lletget, AM, LA Galaxy

Everyone spent their week injecting an opinion into the Nigel de Jong conversation, but the Galaxy have used the majority of the last five days to prepare for a difficult road trip to Houston on Friday.

The Dynamo have been an exciting team to watch so far in 2016, but they have displayed plenty of defensive weaknesses.

Look for Sebastian Lletget to exploit the deficiencies in the Houston back line in order to set up Gyasi Zardes and Mike Magee in the box. The former West Ham United player showed signs of that in the final third against Portland. If the Galaxy are aggressive in attack early on at BBVA Compass Stadium, they could pounce for three or four goals.

Shkelzen Gashi, FW, Colorado Rapids

One of the major surprises so far this season has been the form of the Colorado Rapids.

The Rapids will be in a great spot to pick up three more points on Saturday against the struggling New York Red Bulls at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Offseason acquisition Shkelzen Gashi should cause plenty of problems to the Red Bulls defense as he looks to build on his first strike of the year from Wednesday's win over Sporting KC. The 27-year-old will line up on the left side of a 4-2-3-1 formation, but he'll also drift inside to try to link up with Marco Pappa and Luis Solignac.

Tranquillo Barnetta, AM, Philadelphia Union

The entrance of Tranquillo Barnetta in the 63rd minute changed the complexion of Philadelphia's 2-1 win over Orlando City in Week 6.

The scorer of a tremendous game-winning free-kick is working his way back to full fitness, and if he starts against Seattle, he'll give the Union a chance to leave CenturyLink Field with a point.

Barnetta and forward C.J. Sapong should combine well in the middle of the park, and that could lead to more space on the flanks for the wingers to work in.

Nuno Coelho, CB, Sporting Kansas City

In order to win the battle for first place in the Western Conference on Sunday night at Toyota Stadium, Sporting Kansas City need a strong performance out of center back Nuno Coelho.

The Portuguese defender has been one of the few consistent figures in defense this season, and he will face his toughest task to date against the dynamic FC Dallas attack even if Mauro Diaz doesn't start.

Handling the movement of Michael Barrios, Maximiliano Urruti, Fabian Castillo and Tesho Akindele will be quite the difficult task for the 30-year-old. As long he prepares better than the Timbers did for their Wednesday loss to FC Dallas, Coelho stands a fighting chance on Sunday.

Game of the Week

Sporting Kansas City at FC Dallas

There is potential for attacking fireworks on both ends of the pitch at Toyota Stadium on Sunday night.

The FC Dallas quartet mentioned above has found the back of the net on six occasions in Diaz's absence. If Diaz finds his way into the starting 11, Oscar Pareja will be able to bring one of those offensive weapons off the bench if FC Dallas struggle to break the Coelho-led Sporting KC defense.

Sporting KC also boast a few in-form attackers in Dom Dwyer and Benny Feilhaber. Dwyer's movement across the pitch has been fantastic through six weeks, and he is sure to cause some trouble against center back Matt Hedges. Feilhaber's passing may be able to carve holes against what should be a tight FC Dallas back four.

The battle in the middle of the park will be intriguing as well, as both sides possess some of the toughest central midfielders in the league. With Soni Mustivar dealing with a hamstring knock, per the MLS injury report, the pressure will be on Roger Espinoza to organize the Sporting KC midfield and force things out wide. Any combination of Kellyn Acosta, Victor Ulloa and Carlos Gruezo will try to wreak havoc against Feilhaber and his playmaking abilities.

The winner of the contest in Frisco, Texas, will take control of first place in the West. FC Dallas lead the West with 14 points, while Sporting KC sit two points back in second.

Nigel de Jong Makes X-Rated Tackle on Darlington Nagbe During Galaxy vs. Timbers
MLS News
Monday, 11 April 2016 04:08

Nigel de Jong's horror tackle on Darlington Nagbe forced the American midfielder to be stretchered off in the 72nd minute as Los Angeles Galaxy and Portland Timbers drew 1-1 at the Stubhub Center on Sunday.

The pair both went in for a 50-50 ball, but Dutchman De Jong's lunge was wildly mistimed, and he ended up stamping on Nagbe's ankle—see below video, via sports writer Eduard Cauich:

The Galaxy midfielder said after the match that it was never his intention to hurt Nagbe, per the club's website:

It was a ball that came my way. It was 50-50 and normally I always have those balls. But I went over the ball and caught the ball a little bit and caught most of his ankle.

It was a pity; it was never my intention to hurt him. He’s a good kid, as well, and I said that after the game, as well, to him. It’s a pity, but that’s football, as well. It was never my intention, and when a ball comes in that situation, you always go for it 100 per cent. Unfortunately, I caught him.

The incident prompted a Twitter spat between the two clubs:

Meanwhile, FS1 analyst Stuart Holden—who was the victim of another dangerous De Jong tackle in March 2010—made a damning assessment of the Dutchman's tackle and predicted further punishment for the former AC Milan player, per Simon Borg of the official MLS website:

I’m sitting here and now I’m seeing this challenge firs hand on Darlington Nagbe, and it makes me feel sick. Because I know what Darlington Nagbe is going through. We saw him sitting there. He had the towel over his head. We saw his body mannerism and that’s a man that knows he’s done something serious. I don’t want to speculate what it is, but I know it’s not good. And De Jong did go over and apologize, but there is absolutely no excuse for that type of challenge. We don’t need it in the game. It’s horrific. It’s horrible. And he’s going to get retroactive punishment.

It is far from the first time that De Jong, 31, has been involved in on-field aggression. He infamously planted his foot into Xabi Alonso's chest in the 2010 World Cup final between Netherlands and Spain:

On that occasion, he surprisingly escaped with only a yellow card, as he also did after Sunday's tackle on Nagbe.

MLS Team of the Week: Sapong, Dwyer, Espindola Lead List of Week 6's Best
MLS News
Monday, 11 April 2016 00:16

The sixth week of play in Major League Soccer provided fans with a wide array of talking points once the weekend's final whistle sounded on Sunday night.

The biggest attacking headline was produced by D.C. United, who powered four goals past the Vancouver Whitecaps at RFK Stadium on Saturday.

Sporting Kansas City continued their terrific early-season form with a win over the New York Red Bulls, who can't seem to figure things out in the final third.

In addition to the splendid attacking performances throughout the United States and Canada, there was also a bit of controversy on Sunday night, when Nigel de Jong injured Darlington Nagbe with a harsh challenge and only received a yellow card for his actions.

After going over all the noteworthy individual showings from Week 6, we settled on a 4-3-3 formation for our latest Bleacher Report MLS Team of the Week.

Ultimate Guide to MLS Weekend: Red Card Issue Can Be Fixed by Adjustments
MLS News
Friday, 08 April 2016 01:30

The one issue that has plagued Major League Soccer during the first five weeks of the season has been the enforcement of red cards.

In the 42 matches played across the league since March 6, 16 ejections have been delivered by 13 different referees.

The concern about the presumed growing number of red cards throughout the United States and Canada came to the forefront again after four players were sent off during Week 5.

During a conference call with the media on Thursday afternoon, Professional Referees Organization general manager Peter Walton tried to clear things up regarding the increased criticism of officials.

“Nothing has changed in law," Walton said. "Nothing has changed in the way PRO wants the game to be played and administered. What has changed is our referees are much more consistent in the application of the law we want them to apply."

While the quality on the pitch in regard to the personnel has dramatically improved over the last few years, PRO has worked on fine-tuning the skill sets of its referees.

What we are seeing at the start of 2016 is the consistency that Walton and others in charge at PRO are looking for.

"I’ve spent a considerable amount of time with the refereeing group in preseason going through plays, various examples from previous seasons and talking to them so they understood," Walton said. "What we’re seeing now is that application being consistently applied."

The consistency across the board from the league's officials is needed in a division that continues to raise the bar in terms of talent. In order for MLS to become one of the best leagues in the world, like commissioner Don Garber wants it to be, every part of the game needs to have the highest possible quality.

Instead of griping about most of the red cards, most of which don't warrant legitimate arguments against an ejection, players must adjust to the way the referees are calling the games.

“Reality is when you speak to players and coaches in the comforts of a hotel in January, what we show them, I think, makes complete sense, and they absorb, they take it in, they understand and agree," Walton said. "When it manifests itself on the field in March and April, it’s a different feeling."

"When it’s applied in action, it becomes slightly more hard to accept," Walton said. "If the players continue making such challenges, referees will continue making such decisions. I do think given time it will be modified."

Just like every top striker misses a golden opportunity in front of goal, referees are going to incorrectly rule on fouls that should warrant red cards at some point in the season. That happened in Week 5 as Orlando City's Brek Shea received a yellow for a first-half challenge that should've seen him sent off. In that situation, the left-back went on to influence Orlando City's win over Portland with a goal 17 minutes after his reckless tackle.

The good news when it comes to retroactive punishment is MLS has a Disciplinary Committee that rules on challenges like the one Shea made during Sunday's game at the Citrus Bowl. The league rectified the situation by suspending the United States international for Friday's trip to Philadelphia.

Suspending Shea a few days after he made an impact in a match that could've witnessed a different result won't sit well with fans, especially those in Portland, but that's what happens when you play the game with a human margin of error.

As we move on with the rest of the 2016 campaign, we are sure to see more ugly tackles, especially those of the two-footed variety that have been on display too much early in the year. The adjustments made by the players to the officiating will be key as the season progresses into the summer and fall.

Whether those alterations will be made starting in Week 6 remains to be seen, but if the coaches and players across MLS want to see a decrease in red cards, they must do their part as well.

Week 6 Schedule

Orlando City at Philadelphia Union (Friday, 7 p.m. ET, UniMas)

Columbus Crew at Montreal Impact (Saturday, 4 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

Toronto FC at New England Revolution (Saturday, 4 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

Vancouver Whitecaps at D.C. United (Saturday, 5:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

Sporting Kansas City at New York Red Bulls (Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

San Jose Earthquakes at FC Dallas (Saturday, 9 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

Colorado Rapids at Real Salt Lake (Saturday, 9:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live)

Seattle Sounders at Houston Dynamo (Sunday, 4 p.m. ET, ESPN)

Chicago Fire at New York City FC (Sunday, 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1)

Portland Timbers at LA Galaxy (Sunday, 9:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1)

Players to Watch

Kaka, AM, Orlando City

After his tremendous display on Sunday against Portland, Kaka is expected to make his second start of the season against Philadelphia on Friday.

Even if the Brazilian legend is without forward Cyle Larin, who left the Portland match with a hamstring tweak, he should have plenty of tricks up his sleeve.

The skill set of the 33-year-old will hand the Union defense a massive test in the fight for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

Bradley Wright-Phillips, FW, New York Red Bulls

Something needs to change in attack for the New York Red Bulls in the near future, or they could sink further down the Eastern Conference standings.

Jesse Marsch's side come into Saturday's home match versus Sporting Kansas City with one win and three defeats in four matches.

Bradley Wright-Phillips has been active in front of goal early in the season with seven shots on target, but none of them have found the back of the net. If the 31-year-old forward is able to open his account at home on Saturday, the Red Bulls could get their season back on track.

Axel Sjoberg, CB, Colorado Rapids

After pulling off impressive home wins over the Galaxy and Toronto FC, the Colorado Rapids need to prove they can get the job done on the road as well.

In addition to earning seven points from four matches, the Rapids have only let in two strikes over 360 minutes.

The contributions of Axel Sjoberg in the middle of the back four on Saturday will be key for Pablo Mastroeni's side in Week 6 as they look to stop Joao Plata and the Real Salt Lake attack in this season's first edition of the Rocky Mountain Cup.

Nigel de Jong, CDM, LA Galaxy

It turns out Bruce Arena knew exactly what he was doing in the offseason.

On Sunday against the Timbers, the Galaxy have a chance to prove that new acquisitions Nigel de Jong and Ashley Cole will wreak havoc throughout the 2016 season.

De Jong will be tasked with stopping the dangerous Diego Valeri at the StubHub Center. If he disrupts the Argentinian playmaker over 90 minutes, the Timbers may have a hard time producing in the final third.

Game of the Week

Orlando City at Philadelphia Union

When the schedule was initially released, no one expected Friday's match at Talen Energy Stadium to be a showdown of first versus third in the Eastern Conference.

Orlando sits atop the East with eight points from four games, but the Union have an opportunity to overtake the Lions with a win on home soil.

If Larin reaches full fitness, we should witness a terrific showcase of forwards between the Canadian and C.J. Sapong, both of whom have the ability to create something out of nothing.

The top head-to-head battle on the pitch will come in the middle of the park, where Orlando's defensive midfield pair of Darwin Ceren and Cristian Higuita face the improved Union attack that could feature Tranquillo Barnetta from the start of the match for the first time this season.

Kaka Scores 1, Sets Up 2 in Orlando City's 4-1 MLS Win over Portland Timbers
MLS News
Monday, 04 April 2016 06:07

Class is permanent—just ask Orlando City's Kaka.

The Brazilian made his Major League Soccer season debut Sunday night as Orlando thrashed defending champions Portland Timbers at the Citrus Bowl in Florida.

The ex-AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder delivered a cross for Seb Hines to head home to put the hosts in front after 13 minutes.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, the 33-year-old exchanged passes with Brek Shea, who fired an unstoppable shot to double the advantage.

And Kaka put the game out of Portland's reach early in the second half with a goal of his own:

A Kevin Molino spot-kick made it 4-0 before Jack McInerney scored a consolation goal in the 89th minute.

After four games, the undefeated Orlando leads MLS's Eastern Conference, while Portland has yet to kick into gear, sitting ninth in the West.
